Lubricating roof question

My question is I watched the tube on lubricating the roof to stop squeaks but do I have to prop up the roof one video shows a special tool from mb another video shows no tool. I read somewhere that if the roof is opened half way then it will only stay this way for a few minutes and then collapse, please help I want to stop the squeaks and lubricate but donít want to damage anything
