2005 SLK350

Hi guys.... new here....(sorry such a long post but wanted you to know my lack of knowledge and why I am looking to learn more)

I am trying to research a little and find out the “real story” on the SLK350 from the enthusiasts that drive and work on them. We are new to the European cars as I have always driven GM or Japanese.... finally getting all the kids and grandkids grown and giving up the Goldwing motorcycle for travel and have ended up with 2005 Volvo S60 turbo and 2004 BMW 330CI convertible. My wife has found a very clean 2005 MB SLK350 at what appears to be reasonable price 85,000 miles for around $8500 and she is in love with the look. So what I am asking is are there any specifically known problems or weak links with these cars? Are they very dependable? ( some sites say 4 out of 5 stars while others say 1 out of 5 on dependability and about the same spread for long trip comfort).... is everything dealer only repair where a computer is needed to reprogram the car with everything you do to it? .... I know that is a ton of questions and I have found on most of the forums I have belonged to there are usually some people that remember when they were new to a brand and didn’t know crap and seam to be very willing to help the newbies and then others that try to belittle the new folks for asking what appears to be a stupid question to them but it is a legit one for a newby............so I am hear to learn a little about dependability, parts that tend to break or fail and overall ability for a DYIer with decent mechanical ability to repair this type of vehicle..... I figure you guys would be more helpful, knowledgeable and more of the experts around real world issues of these cars that some goof that gets paid to write articles.

Remember I am new but ready to jump into MB ownership and sell off a Volvo and BMW if I can get a little insight and advice from you guys. Thank you for any insight into the MB SLK350 and MB in general. I look forward to learning much on here.

Thanks
Joe

The SLK350 is nice car but watch out for the idler/balance shaft gear wear.
Run the car with a scanner or have it inspected by a professional.
Any doubts, walk away.
