Cool Questions from a newb!

Hi gang,

I'm currently hopping for my first R171 (and first MB) and have a few quick questions please.

1) Does a red seat belt and red stitching in the leather mean a car is Sports package?*
I see many ads with the above but they are not advertised as Sports models so am not sure if they are, and the vendor doesn't know, or whether they were optional on any SLK.

2) Where is the button to put the Sports models into Manual mode?*

3) I keep seeing photos of a phone in what appears to be the middle section where the handbrake is -* why? What is this?

4)*The ads also state 'phone prep' even though my understanding is it's all Bluetooth and wireless and the calls come through your car speakers regardless so what is phone prep and why do several ads show a detachable gadget with 'answer/end call' buttons?

5) I'm sure I saw a roof mod that not only allows you to operate the roof whilst driving but also reduce the time from 22 seconds to 14 seconds but I can't find it - does it exist or did I dream it?

6) On the wing mirror control I see left and right wing mirror options but also, on many models, an option inbetween these two. Is this for folding the wing mirrors in?
I assume it is but the owner's manual I found online omitted this option altogether.

Thanks in advance.

Lemme try some of these but it's easier if you list the year and model you're looking at.

1) Can't help with stitching. I haven't fiddled with "sports" models. I guess you might be looking at AMG versions.
2) Auto to manual is by moving the shift lever. No button although my '07 has a button by the shift lever with S and C settings used for standard and slippery driving. Look in the manual.
3) The model you're looking at pre-dates Bluetooth incorporation in the head unit. The "puck" you may find in the console was intended to accommodate a cell phone Bluetooth signal to play through your audio system.
4) In order to make the puck work, the car had to have a full pre-wiring. Puck was bought separately.
5) The top control you're probably talking about is the SmartTop from Mods4cars. An absolute must for every R171. It's the Swiss Army knife that fixes nearly everything the R171 makers missed. But it doesn't make the top retract faster; always stuck at 22-23 seconds. Strongly encourage you to try it out.
6) I don't have folding mirrors but some do. Will be addressed in whatever model manual you're reviewing.

One last suggestion. This forum is great for answers to the wide range of MB models but the forum is the gold mine for all models of the SLK. More knowledge and answers there for any question you have.

Ok. I lied. That was NOT my last suggestion. This is: find the car you like and buy it. I've owned an R170 and now the 171 and they're more fun than almost anything else you can find.
