Haven't seen any update about your purchase yet so I'll offer an opinion.
I have an '07 280 which I bought in '08. It had 4,132 miles on it then and it was a steal at about half the original price. Today is has just over 99,000 miles (garage-kept) and it's every bit as beautiful as the day I bought it. Better, even; it's a timeless design. Came with 16" wheels and I bumped those to MB OEM 17". Added the SmartTop (still love this with every drive), Wind Restrictor and, just recently, a Bluetooth module. A month ago I replaced engine and transmission mounts; originals were just plain worn out and producing some vibration. I added K&N air filters very early in my ownership.
In all that time the only "repair" I've needed was replacement of a belt sensor to pass inspection; new battery; tires; windshield washer pump and the usual.
Yes, my M272 engine is in the "danger zone" but has never yet faltered. For perspective on your possible purchase I offer my most recent experience. A few weeks back I was charmed by a used and affordable SL550, the SLK's bigger and more expensive brother. Lotsa gizmos and considerably more horsepower. But being "affordable" also meant being at least as old as my perfectly functioning SLK.
I concluded that, even if my R171 balance shaft issue materialized, the fix would cost far less than a decently-recent and "edge-of-affordable" SL.
Obviously, my answer for your consideration of the R171 is "Go for it." You'll hate yourself if you don't.
