Considering an r171. What to look for?

I've always loved the size and look of the slk and I'm ready to start checking out some r171. What sort of things should I be checking for in a used slk? I'll be looking at pre-facelift (04-07). I'm not terribly concerned about minor issues, as I do all the work on my cars. Looking for any major hidden problems that would be deal breakers. Thanks in advance!

Bump for this topic. I'm also looking at an '05 R171 SLK350, manual trans. 130k miles. What should I be in the lookout for?

05, I am not sure if it's in the range of vehicles made with a balance shaft issue. Check the stretch of the chain while inspecting the car.

Balance shaft issue was on 6 cyl only thru mid 2008. There are many theads about it and you can check by VIN if a car is effected. You'd have to pull a car fax or see a repair invoice to know if it has been done.

Nope - pretty much all sorted '08 until production ceased. The later 350s had significantly more power and torque. The 7gTronic gearbox benefits from a good dollop of torque, so if I were looking for a 6cyl, it would definitely be a 350.

My 2011 SLK 300 has been a fantastic smooth ride with plenty of zip!

Haven't seen any update about your purchase yet so I'll offer an opinion.

I have an '07 280 which I bought in '08. It had 4,132 miles on it then and it was a steal at about half the original price. Today is has just over 99,000 miles (garage-kept) and it's every bit as beautiful as the day I bought it. Better, even; it's a timeless design. Came with 16" wheels and I bumped those to MB OEM 17". Added the SmartTop (still love this with every drive), Wind Restrictor and, just recently, a Bluetooth module. A month ago I replaced engine and transmission mounts; originals were just plain worn out and producing some vibration. I added K&N air filters very early in my ownership.

In all that time the only "repair" I've needed was replacement of a belt sensor to pass inspection; new battery; tires; windshield washer pump and the usual.

Yes, my M272 engine is in the "danger zone" but has never yet faltered. For perspective on your possible purchase I offer my most recent experience. A few weeks back I was charmed by a used and affordable SL550, the SLK's bigger and more expensive brother. Lotsa gizmos and considerably more horsepower. But being "affordable" also meant being at least as old as my perfectly functioning SLK.

I concluded that, even if my R171 balance shaft issue materialized, the fix would cost far less than a decently-recent and "edge-of-affordable" SL.

Obviously, my answer for your consideration of the R171 is "Go for it." You'll hate yourself if you don't.

I've just purchased an 07 SLK with 33k on the odometer, so far extremely happy with it.
