Angry Warning - the drinks holder is for cosmetic purposes only!!

I just thought that I'd warn everyone of whats just happened to me.

In the UK, the drinks holder is an option.

I use it all the time, but always have a sealed bottle. However, it's a drink, and obviously there will be a small amount of liquid that may well drip.

You would assume that Mercedes thought about this, and you would also have thought that there would be some kind of seal or lip to stop any small drips from entering inside the radio.

Well, it would appear not!!!

My radio started smoking the other day, and it is caused by a small drop of water running in between the drinks holder and the radio, running about half an inch backwards and inside the dash, and then straight down onto the circuit board.

My local dealership say that this is not covered by the warranty and want £1300 for a new Audio 20.

What do you think? Is this a design fault or what?

As far as I can see, if you have an unopened ice cold can of drink in the cupholder, you could have the same thing happen to your SLK if any condensation runs down the side of the can!!!

You have been warned. The drinks holder is for cosmetic purposes only, and should not be used to hold drinks!

Yes, the drinks holder in the R170 and R171 was really just an afterthought demanded by the American MB market.

So they deviced a flimsy holder that doesn't protect against anything if it drops the liquids onto your radio.

I have NEVER put a drink there due to that risk, I know some people used it often and I think they are brave. I would not take that risk. I don't drink and drive. There is an aftermarket cup holder that is much better, it clips on the side of the seats and if it does spill, it'll drip on the seat and floor mats, which can be easily wiped off, thanks for the warning and sorry to hear about your damage audio 20.

Yes you are, I would not take that risk, if I feel the need to drink in the car, I would get the one that clips on the side of the seats as mentioned before

Yeah I've dripped coffee onto my Audio20 before, so much that the rubberized layer started bubbling and ripping. I still gotta use it though..just sip enough of the drink so it doesn't spill when you're drifting. =)

I keep my water bottles in the cargo net on the passenger side. Like Ynot, I don't drink and drive, but the water is there if I need it. If I want ready access, I can just drop a bottle into the storage compartment between the seats.
