Suspension Crunching?

Hi All,

I have an early production model SLK200 which I ordered 2 years before the car came out hence I was one of the first to get a UK car.

Eversince I have been plagued with problems which has meant that the car keeps going back to the dealership.

One problem that keeps getting fixed (but the engineers don't know what the actual problem is) is that the front suspension makes a crunching sound when going over speed bumps. I have had the front bushes (whatever they are) replaced, and even the front shock absorbers. Still the problem keeps coming back, and each time, the engineers just re-lubricate the springs.

Other problems, which I'd like to know if anyone has experienced, is that the front leather seats look worn (car has covered 16k miles) and surely MB quality has not been good in this area. Is this a fault that will be covered by the warranty???

Other problems I can share (also from reading this site/forum), the ESP problem, the non-working rain sensors, and sub standard quality control.

I love the car however, but am not happy with the build quality. Should I be loyal to MB anymore??

(My family have the S Class and the C class which seem to have no problems whatsoever).

MickyFinn,
London

Why would you be loyal to MB? Do you feel that they are loyal to you? Try lots of cars -- buy what you like.

By 'non-working rain sensors', what exactly do you mean? Are they always non-working, presumably in 'auto' mode, or intermittent like mine seem to occasionally be. In other words, the auto setting sometimes doesn't seem to be sensitive enough and they won't wipe the screen even when it's completely covered in a fine covering of misty raindrops and visibility is approaching severely limited.

RE: Suspension Crunching?

I have a R171 SLK 200. Built around April/May 2005.

I have the same suspension problem. I just slow down, really slown down, when I go over speed hump now.

I was told that its because the suspension stut not returning fast enough, i.e., not hard enough!

not sure but its not something i cannot put up with yet.

What I can't put up with is all the noise I am getting from the roof, door and trim. sound like its a 5 years old car with all the trim half lose!

RE: Suspension Crunching?

When I mentioned the rain sensors, when you put on the wipers to that setting, nothing actally is sensed. So the rain is pouring and the wipers dont come on!

The suspension problem is annoying, as the car is only one year old. But the noise started after a week and MB can't find a solution.

I love the look of the car and I thought that the SLK was meant to be the new breed of MB cars which had better build quality than in recent years!

They lied! I fancy the SL but does anyone reckon that they are any better???

Hello MickyFinn ... It seems that I have the same problem than you have on my SLK 350, the front suspension makes a crunching sound!! My MB dealer is going to replace both shocks heads so I will see if it solves the problem.

Do you still get the problem with the roof down????
My car is due for a service and am going to get them to look at it BUT although it sounds very like a problem with the suspension, front shock absorber. I carried out some tests and actually found that it must be some problem with the roof not fully engaging into the locking pins as with the roof down its fine.
The symptons however sound exactly the same, I get a real kind of suspension 'slap' / 'crunch' sound going over bumps. This maybe why they keep changing things and the fault isn't going away.

I am going to test my SLK with the roof down, but I doubt the problem is with the roof not well engaged. I clearly hear the noise located at the front shock absorbers. I keep you informed!
Did you change already the shocks heads?
