Self Induced CEL

I have been trying to get time to address many items on my R129 and finally this last Sunday (my only day off) I had my chance and hit the ground running at 7:30/am.
I completed the following items;

1) Oil and Filter Change
2) New Cabin Air Filter
3) New Engine Air Filter(s)
4) New Bose Amp
5) New Antenna Mast
6) New Fuel Filter
7) Installed Dash Cam (hard wired)
8) Installed Backup Camera

The installation of the Backup Cam required the removal of the android auto stereo head unit to make the connection for the Cam and reverse trigger as well as running the trigger wire and Camera wire from the rear of the vehicle to the head unit.

All went well until I probed the driver side rear light assembly to find the hot lead to the backup lights to make the final connection. Iím assuming my probe (I did not touch or alter anything else in any place in the vehicle other than noted above) has somehow fried two (2) fuses (#10 and #11) resulting in my cluster to lose power and a constant beeping identical to when you leave the head lights on.

I took a meter and physically pulled and metered each and every fuse (trunk and engine compartment) and after replacing fuses #10 and #11 now have the cluster back and the beeping is gone. The only lingering issue is I now have a CEL that was not there previously. Iím at my wits end and over 2 hours from any dealer. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Tim,

Sounds like you touched a few things related to the engine: oil, and air filters. My first check would be to make sure the filter housing is on nice and tight (you have a Ď98 so if itís the m113 engine, then this could be more relevant). Check that you didnít knock anything out of place when you did the filters. MAFs can be touchy from what I read.

Disconnect the battery and reconnect. Some CELs go away on their own (w140s with bad gasoline) or after disconnecting battery if theyíre not that serious (a guess). If those fuses triggered it, this could solve it.

Anyone else have any other ideas?

Take the path of least resistance: Connect a $20 or better OBD-II code reader to the port under the steering column and read the code which is driving the Check Engine light.
timm9, Merc96 and FATHERTIME like this.

I agree. Get a cheap WiFi OBDII WiFi reader from Amazon and download OBDFusion to your phone. Best $50 I have EVER spent. Has helped with my SL, my GS300, Jeep GC, and Sequoia.

I had a few minutes to hook up the OBD reader this morning before my first appointment and received this code: P1747.

I did a quick search and did not find much help.

Does this vehicle have a OVP Module?

Thanks!

Hi All!

I swung by my house on the way back from an appointment and DC'd the Battery for a few minutes.

After re-connection CEL Light is gone!

Thanks!

The CEL will unconditionally extinguish when you disconnect the battery. It might not return, but it probably will.

Really hope that it doesn't, Tim, because tracking down this problem could be a headache. Code P1747 is an interruption in CAN communication between the engine controller and the transmission controller.

You have no OVP. The power supply functions of the OVP are performed by the "Base Module" in your car.

bobterry99,

Thank you!

I know that you are extremely knowledgeable and have made many substantial contributions to this forum and I'm grateful for your assistance.

With that said, I'm hoping and praying that in this particular instance you are mistaken...:-)

Thank you again!

Timm I found this:

ďP1747 Electronic Gear Selector Module: Defective Interaction of CAN with control unit A1(instrument cluster)Ē

I think when you shorted those fuses out, some electronic communication error happened. I do not think you will have this CEL again, it seems like a glitch
