Engine swap? 1999 SL500

Hi everyone,
Just wondering as I have come across a good offer for an M119 6.0 AMG engine with transmission, diffs and ECU.

Would it be possible to swap out my M113 with that engine?
What about the transmission? Diffs?
What other ECU modules are required?

Lots of questions...

Anything is possible, but it comes at a cost. Wouldn’t it be cheaper to buy a SL600 ?

You should check on driveshaft differences. Also check part numbers for struts between the two cars to see if you need to change those over. Depending on lengths/positions etc, the tranny linkages might be different too. Are they both R129s and of the same year? If not you should consider switching all underhood wiring harnesses/starter/alternator too. Motor mounts and locations?

What year M119.

You will also need a wiring harness or two or three. What transmission do you plan to use.

Also, just read this on the most current Facebook post for the Benz buy and sell group:

Someone help?

I have a 1985 380se that was swapped with the 5.0 v8 from the previous 3.8 liter. It runs fine. But the radiator fan doesn’t spin and at idle she overheats and the coolant just spilled out all at once. I don’t even know where to begin but could someone give me some pointers?

Answer that was posted:
You have to get a dual electric fan set up

Something else to consider.

Why re-invent the wheel, someone at the factory already did it.

Sell your 500 and buy a 600, and you will be driving all the time.

Start the swap project and you'll be off line for a long time, get frustrated, and wondering why you just didnt buy a 600 to begin with.

M113 motors are basically bulletproof and cheap to maintain, not so much with the V12's.

Other than the wow factor, the 600 wont be that much more quicker, (if at all), or handle as well.

Good Luck, what ever you decide to do

Geez I gotta chime in on this> I have a 3 R129's and no way can the SL320 OR SL500 come close to the SL600 V12, for speed I've read where others have said they aint no quicker but I doubt they ever drove a V12.

Return on investment - I admit that if the right 600 comes along, I'd buy it over the 500. For me it's just is the additional investment worth it after I already have a 500.

The two 129's I would like to get are a SA or a 600, or even better yet a SA600, and I won't argue the speed thing with you at all, as I haven't driven a SL600, just read reviews.

If the right 600 came along at the right price, I might sell my 2000 SL500 to get it. But no way I would even consider an engine swap to achieve the same goal. Anything is possible, just how motivated are you.

I just noticed that Roncallo responded to this thread, his 600 swap into a 107 is very special, and I see someone is just starting a 600 swap into a SLC.

If the OP decides to go ahead with the 129/600 swap, I'll certainly be looking forward to reading about the progress.

I think the OP is talking about a 6L V8 AMG M119 engine to replace his 5L V8 M113 and not the 6L regular V12 M120.

Swapping a V12 into a SL500 would be difficult as there are so many specific parts (it's really a different car). But swapping a M119 for a M113 would be a bit easier.

So this. I had read this type of comment before I bought my SA. During my search I test drove an SL600 (1999 base, IIRC) and it was WAY different than the 500s I had driven up until then. I don't care what the published numbers say, butt dyno says two completely different animals. Knowing I had teenagers coming into driving age and that I would let them drive my car on occasion, I decided against a V12 because I thought it'd be insane to let them out in one. That was a few years ago. I'm ready for a V12 now.
