R129 replacement Bio-degradable harness availability
 
I have replaced 2 out of 3 harnesses already and the 3rd one is really iffy, needs to be done and it is the big one. My dealer says that MBNA does not support them any longer so they aren't available. My tech says he can repair/wrap what he can see but that sounds like a fool's errand. What are we to do?

What number is that for? Upper, lower or MAF harness? Which one do you need?

I am told it is the big one that runs underneath the car. The part number was verified by the Mercedes dealer.

Lower harness (starter, oil pressure and such) Definitely NLA, for a quality shop, its about $200-$300 to do it right.

Thanks for the information. If it is NLA, how can it be repaired/replaced so inexpensively? Where does the new harness come from? I was told up to 10 hours to replace it IF there was a new harness available.

If we are indeed talking about the lower harness (starter, oil etc), there is no way in hell it's 10 hours. I should have repaired mine when I had transmission out on SL500, but I was too concentrated on rebuilding that automatic box...

To my best knowledge, there are 3 main harnesses that are affected (depending on the model of R129): Main upper, throttle body, lower starter harness. Few other pieces are (depending on the model again): MAF and electric cooling fans. Other affected pieces (usually, even later models) are headlight wires.

In 10 hours you would be able to MAKE a new harness AND replace it. The lower harness is only 5 or 6 wires, out of which the heavy battery cable usually doesn't even need replacing. (It came with non degrading insulation)
It consists of oil pressure wire, low oil level wire, alternator exciter wire, charge on alternator, starter and starter coil wires.
Of the three degrading harnesses, this is the easiest to replicate.
