SL600, deleted muffler, thinking about resonator too.

Helllllooo R129 aficionados,

I deleted the rear muffler on our 2001 SL600 and its a little louder, but just barely. Before was totally silent, now its just quiet.
I was thinking of going and getting the resonator cut off as well in hopes of actually hearing the wondrous M120 roar.

Has anyone deleted the muffler and resonator also?

The resonator should just unbolt from the front part of the dual exhaust system, no need to cut anything.

In it's place you could either make a pipe only resonator eliminator or get one (stainless) like I did.

After the resonator eliminator you could easily fashion the remainder of the 2.75 inch straight tail pipe to exit at the stock location.

I currently run the eliminator and the AMG muffler shown and it has a muted snarl on startup and during acceleration, but is completely quiet during steady state driving. I would guess with no muffler whatsoever, it would drone a bit during driving. At least with a bolt on setup you could always revert if you decided you didn't like it.

Can you please show pictures of the rear muffler deleted.

I like the idea of removing the resonator as well.

Why do you people want a sophisticated SL to sound like a US hot rod.

Slownrusty,

I have a bolt on resonator eliminator for a V8 (different configuration and inlet diameter than the V12 setup). All you would have to do is fashion a "muffler eliminator" single pipe to span from the resonator eliminator outlet to the stock exit for the exhaust system. I even have a spare 2.75 inch diameter stainless steel flange.

The V8 resonator eliminator in the picture isn't stainless.

The exhaust on these cars choke the engine's ability to breathe and make power, deleting the muffler and resonator will assist in freeing up some HP and nothing wrong with dropping a few lbs in the process. Have you heard the current line-up of AMG V8s? Their stock exhausts are downright angry (in a good way). I personally like my cars with some personality and hearing the V8 come alive is orchestral.

You must be old.

Plus, as slowandrusty pointed out current AMG exhausts sound nothing like you grandfathers Mercedes, due to their extensive development in flow and sound engineering. Trust me, a properly tuned Mercedes exhaust will never sound anything like an American hot rod...

Mahunt, do you have any sound clips of your car?

I don't and it's not like the engine all of a sudden now shrieks at 6K RPM.

The resonator eliminator is a quite subtle change and I don't think I could produce a clip that would capture the difference. As I've written, the only noticeable difference is at startup and during acceleration.

As you know, the M120 with the stock exhaust setup sounds like a nice sewing machine at idle and steady state driving. During acceleration it sounds like a slightly angrier sewing machine. All of this sound comes from the engine itself under the hood as there is zero exhaust note, only the sound of gas escaping from the rear of the car.

The resonator eliminator allows "some" exhaust note to be created by an otherwise inherently quiet drive train.

Mahunt,
I already deleted the large rear muffler, so i have a bit more growl than the silence that existed before.
I am hoping deleting the resonator, like you have, will give it even more growl. I am thinking a lot of the exhaust noise is probably muffled by the massive cats.
