Cruise Control Issue

I hate electrical (then why did I sell a 107 and buy a 129?), especially intermittent electrical glitches. Let me first say I suffer from a condition that, perhaps some of you can relate... no-ass-atall! Sitting for long periods is uncomfortable, especially so in European and Japanese seats (My ford Ranger and my mom's Chry 300, 100% no problem, but the 129 and my LS, owiee), so I move my legs and shift in the seat quite a bit. Imagine my disappointment then, when I jumped in the 129 today, let down the hood, and hit the highway for home (100 miles away) and the cruise control didn't work. It has never glitched before, and worked flawlessly this morning on the way in... Dammit! Well, I finally gave up and had to pull over at a rest stop 50 miles later, to stretch the ole legs. After starting back up and merging onto the super-slab, I tried the cc once again for kicks... It worked flawlessly!

One question before I drag out the old SDS system and while my time away, does a '97 integrate the cc into the fuel management computer like later cars?

Fun, Fun, Fun...

Best Regards...

RM Smith

Usually this happens when tyres are changed and the diameters are different on each axle.
As this isn't the case, could it be something silly like tyre pressure down on one wheel?

No trees were harmed creating this message, however some electrons were very inconvenienced.

I'll guess the problem us the electronic module for the cruise control.

I'd check all of the inputs to the controller and verify their validity using a multimeter. The diagnostic manual can guide you through those tests.

Presuming they are fine, next I would search the W124 forum for threads describing module repair. At a minimum I believe you will find a member who repairs these modules, and you may even find how to repair it yourself.

Update

After several short jaunts, and a recent 300 miler, my cruise has performed flawlessly... Chock it up to another intermittent fault which, i am sure, will return someday. until then, I'll motor along...

Best Regards...

You might go through the electrical schematics and check the plausibility of all inputs to the engine management computer which relate to the cruise control. I'd start with the brake switch. Better still, invest $300 in a Star Diagnosis diagnostic kit from alixepress.com to investigate your problem.

Took my SL 500 to a reputable German shop and they ran diagnostics, cleared some old codes and CC worked perfectly, next day I got a check engine light, CC still worked fine, after a few trips the check engine light cleared and the CC doesn't work again. Tires are correct and properly inflated.

I'd do as RKH says, clean all the abs pickups sensors and the axle gears that such sensor read. They are usually very dirty and rusty, particularly on a 28 years old car.
