My S had thermal reactors, basically cooked the engine, I was so pissed, found a engine at a junk yard, installed and sold it.

You guys are killing me.
I've always heard 911 engines are bullet proof.

I had a 1966 911S. It was my daily driver for many years, till I sold it in 1986. I still miss that car.

Having said that, my SL500 is much more practical as a daily driver.

Well it won't be my daily driver. I'm looking at taking it into the back roads summer evenings and weekends.
See what I started? I thought I was out. Actually it's still sitting in my garage right now. For a few more days anyway.

There was an era of a couple years - 1975-1976 where both Mercedes and Porsche used these thermal reactors - basically a crude cat converter just off the exhaust manifold. In Porsche's case they cooked the engine ; in Mercedes just cooked the wiring ;-)

Had a 2003 911 - bought in 2006 with 18k miles and a CPO warranty. Sold it in 2008 before the CPO expired... was a blast to drive - but very worrisome. IMS, RMS , Cylinder scoring etc.

Was told engine imploded 2 years later. Catastrophic failure, engine was replaced at a cost of $19k...glad i had sold it when i did.

Garage
The 911 is a grreat car for sure I had a 1985 911 Twin Turbo that was in mint condition.

A year after i sold the 911 the price was double of what i sold it for. If i had known that i would not have sold it

If you are buying a pre Porsche 993 be aware of rust isssues on the car if it have seen snow and salty roads

If i was to buy a 911 now i guess i would buy a 997

There are good and bad generations of Porsches so you need (unless you have money to burn) a good example from a good generation. Some run like trains, others like Yugos. It is wise to do some research beyond your friend's Porsche friend.

The last money I burned was a 5 spot I slipped between the ample cleavage of a fairly attractive stripper years before I got married. She didn't even blow me a kiss.
But it's good advice. I'm on it.
