My top is like new otherwise.
If your top is factory the designers had this in mind. The rear third (windows) is replaceable as a separate unit.

The shop that advertises in the regional MBCA Section newsletter wants $1000 just to do the windows. wants
They say they need the car for two days and make the procedure sound like it's a skill on par with splitting atoms.

Sounds like a rip off to me.

I had all three of my SL's done for $1100,00 including new top and installation. Just changing the windows still requires removing the top so I get a new top.

Two of us followed the videos and replaced the tops on both our R129s on a weekend, one on Saturday and one on Sunday. They averaged about 4 hours each, with the second one being quicker due to our new expertise.

Replacing the whole top assembly is not a big deal. I did it because my top was shot and the frame was starting to corrode and I needed to do the cylinders. But as mentioned earlier if your frame is good I would just do the top.
I was lucky to find a top in my state in good condition with a nice frame for the same price as a replacement top.

I replaced just the soft top on my 2000....never again. Involved. Time consuming.
My 2002, took it to a shop, 7am, picked it up at 5:30 the same day.
Replacing the entire top frame...it'll be a learning experience! Take plenty of pictures!

That's with most shops! Many think that the owner can be bullwoofed.
4 to 5 hundred is a fair price for a days labor for the top replacement. 7/8/9 hundred is a RIP off.

reputable place near me wanted $2000 for top replacement (Haartz top). I'm still ok for another season or two as I just sewed in a new quarter window. Not going to win any concours with it, but looks 1000x better than having a cracked window in there. Thinking if I can find a $1200 install of a top with quality material, I will let a shop do it. But if $2K is the norm, I will take inspiration from dbischoff and do myself.
