SL500 Oil Change

Hey guys, I have another question here

I've looked and looked and cannot find the answer. What oil viscosity and weight do I use on my 1999 SL500?
Thanks y'all

0W-40 or 5W-40 synthetic will do… if you want to buy locally. I switched to Mobile-1 5W-50 but this is not available at local stores…

Walmart has the 5W-50 in SoCal. However I use Castrol GTX 20/50 in all my R129's I change at 5k

my local Costco had the Mobil 1 0W-40 last time I was there. Somewhere in the mid-$30 range, but you get 6 quarts not 5 like the jugs at the retail stores (AAP, AZO, ORLY)

I'm not a chemist but… before Mercedes started selling their own brand (5W-40) motor oil… Mobil 1 0W-40 was recommended by MB. Mercedes doesn't make motor oil so we can only speculate who the supplier is these days. Mobile 1 5W-50 is a high performance synthetic motor oil that meets MB-Approval 229.1 and 229.3.

For normal driving either one should be OK.

I had used Mobil 1 for years - 0w-40 in the E430 and last couple years or so buy the oil at the dealers "Mercedes" oil, I was told, is the Mobil 1 5W-40.. If I didn't get a nice discount from retail I'd get the 0w-40 at Walmart.

Mobil has a variety of viscosities they sell in Europe that they don't sell here - and the 5W-40 is only available here though the dealers it seems.

Firstly I now use a suction pump to drain the sump

Secondly I now use any good quality synthetic oil, usually 5W to 40W given my local climate. I always used Mobil 1 but now other brands are just as good.
