Saratoga Auto Auction -R129 up for bid

I'm a member of the Saratoga Auto Museum so I get notifications when the yearly auction takes place.
I went through the list of consignments to see if there were any R129's.
There is one- a 1996 SL320 with 167,000 miles on it.
The auction estimate is $10,000 to $15,000.
(crickets)
I'm thinking the auction is trying to prop up the price with that estimate.
If that's what they think that's worth, what would the estimate be for my '96 SL500 Sport with 94,000 miles on it?
I've been thinking about moving on, maybe this is the way to go. I can always set a reserve.
But then again, every time I drive it...

Wishful thinking, M104 car, 1996 with 170K miles - realistic price $3-4K is a real market value... If that was an ad in the local paper, with that mileage, it would take a while to sell... Just my $0.02

I really am curious of the final bid $

Regards,
D

D-
I like your 2 cents.
I'll report back after the auction. I usually get the list of what the final bids are.
I may even go to it for a while, but hard to tell when this car will cross the auction block.
Auction takes place Sept. 21-22.

That is part of the logic. Basically, the estimate is as more for the seller than the buyers. Think about duh-vinci's price assessment (which I agree with) - the seller sits down with a auction company and one person says, 'we think it will go for as much as $15k. Sign here to list it in our auction.'

Or same seller sits with an auction company where duh-vinci works, who correctly assesses, 'realistic price $3-4K is a real market value... If that was an ad in the local paper, with that mileage, it would take a while to sell.' That would be a total thanks but no thanks and the auction would have a really short roster of vehicles to sell.

ad to that the auction house either not mentioning no reserve, or convincing the seller to not put a reserve price, and when the auction stops at 3K, well......

I have found with car auctions (not wholesale auctions where all the bidders are generally savvy) - the public as a rule bids higher than market value. Of course a lot of variables come in, but I went to enough to tell me that it is a waste of time thinking you will get a bargain. Occasionally you do but not as a rule.

Everyone wants to sell at the highest and buyers want to pay the lowest. It's a game.

We are here on earth to do good unto others.
What the others are here for, I have no idea.

The auction has just ended and apparently the '96 SL320 got pulled because there is no sold price for it. This being the second year for the auction, they've gone high tech and I watched a bit of it online. The website also has a page listing what all the cars sold for.
