Thumbs down Lost Key Replacement Issue

I own a beautiful 1999 SL500 roadster with less than 118K miles but cannot drive it anymore... (I did drive it three daze and was a pleasure to operate before lossing keys in a marina). A Pensacola MB dealer ordered the Key-Option Kit and was paid for it: later updates last winter status went from "on order" to "unavailable".

MBUSA cannot provide a Key-Option Kit nor replace the missing keys. When contacting them (every month since last September) they do not have a solution??? Awesome car, really poor customer service. Currently paying for storage every month as I am working in the Memphis, TN area.

When asked about the key vendor I was informed they went out of business; next question was did you purchase the tooling? (Silent Duhh...).I hired divers to find my keys that were lost in the Marina: first one found my glasses and iPhone (150.00), second and third were offered $500.00 if they found them (and didn't).

In a word ..WOW! Such fine automotive engineering and really BAD customer service!

Does anyone know where/how/who can assist me (MBUSA keeps making excuses) ? I have a locksmith who can purchase the macinery to make the keys but has to have a programmer in Russia make the key file (last hope).

I miss my awesome roadster....

Bad luck you now own a very large paper weight

I think we need to implement a class action against Mercedes Benz for loss of monetary value on our potential paper weights!!

Those in charge at MB are well aware that keys are needed. They are hoping that this issue resolves itself and owners needing keys give it a rest. They don't care; they have new Benzs' to drive.
The supplier did not just up and quit and the folks in charge at MB knew what was going on but did not head it off.
I have 2 SL's and need key fob as well.
We all know that someone at MB screwed up and are not man enough to own up to this problem and correct it.
MB could very well have these keys made for us, take a loss on it, but won't.
It's all about the money. Period. No money in it for MB, so why bother.
A lawyer won't take on MB...no money in it for them...

Update: "Duhh Daddy...", found the "SL Keys" threads...

Sigh, just got off the phone with MBUSA Cutomer support... "We are still looking for a solution for key replacements for our customers".

Thinking about using Social Media to put a fire under MBUSA.

Scenario: My SL500 on fire with folks roasting weenies over it.
Tagline: What to do with legacy MB Roadsters without keys...

well, if the auction house was able to get a key for a 98R129, they are the only one to have done it in the last 18 months or so. My guess is they happened to have found the key.

Go to your local dealer parts dept and ask for a key. My guess you won't be able to get one.

97+ R129, W140 and older ML keys are NOT available from a dealer in the U.S. trust me.

what is still available (or was a few months ago) is a replacement blade key for the switchblade remote. but that will ONLY work if you still have a working switchblade remote. It just gets you a new blade.
