Omg I thought we settled this once and for all with my YouTube video

Yes you can get keys made .

Not from the dealer but from independent locksmith specializing in Mercedes . Try cobra locksmith mentioned above as they are in your area . My locksmith is on the west coast and doesnít do mail order .

Right. Doesnít do mail order. For us in other parts of the country that presents a problem. I have no issue getting a plain blade key as a spare in case the FOB takes a crap, but literally every place I called said no go. I probably called 25 places. Iím in Chicago.

if You can get a blade key with chip to start your car then you can get a fob . It’s not the fob that’s hard to obtain and program , it’s the chip to start your car that only a few locksmiths can do .

Let me clarify. I can get a blade cut all day long. Itís the chip the presents the issue. I agree, if I can get a ďblade key with chipĒ then all I need is a Chinese knock off FOB. The issue is the chip. I have a few smiths that will cut the blank but nobody that has the chip to program to the car. By my last post, I was saying that I would be fine with getting my hands on a non FOB key just to have a spare that could start the car in case my FOB went poo poo or got lost. I had a hard enough time convincing the wife that I needed an R129 as a toy.... I want nothing to do with telling her itís a paperweight if the key gets lost. Sheís scary when mad.

So after putting it all fit and tight (old blade took some cleaning to switch smoothly) I did the phone camera test and the infra-red was on.
Walked to the car and remote works, while blade and transporder were always operational.
So thanks to this topic I've got motivation to restore 2nd key.
I think ordering shop key in the future might be good idea as well, but I am set for now.
Thanks TV
What is the phone camera test about? I have an iPhone 7 and if i hold the remote FOB to the camera lens and push a button i cannot see any emissions from the IR window

Why don’t you try cobra locksmith as mentioned above ?
Or why don’t you try ace unlocks as posted at post number 56 here;
https://www.benzworld.org/forums/r12...t-issue-6.html

Heck I even offered to have keys and fobs made for other forum members from my local locksmith , and I would personally ship them out since he doesn’t do mail order , just so that no one would EVER get stuck with a car as a paperweight .

If , with all these options available to you , you still can’t figure out how to get a key or fob that will start your car , I don’t know what to tell you . I have proven conclusively they are still available and can be made so no one should ever get stuck with a paperweight

I have read a lot of posts and will admit that I have not gone through every page. I have focused on a local and OEM type solution. I will look at what you mentioned and may hit you up. Not trying to be difficult, just sharing my experience. This is my first ďmodernĒ Mercedes. Have had a few w116s (LOVE that series) and a ton of VWs from all generations. I know VWs have their quirks but I have been able to work around them using VAGCom. Learning that MB is not as easy. At least the R129 has less electronics to hack than a normal VW.

The camera test is for infra-red transmission from the remote.
Electronics are not my thing, but from what I learned - MB remotes use double transmitters for alarm/doors/windows operation and when something stops working, you have to find the way to test it.
Could be that not all remotes have infra-red transmitter.
R129 went via several technologies, so different MY can have different technology.

There is a post on Facebook today, for later model owners, this maybe the solution if you have no keys:

"FINALLY GOT THE F*#KING SPARE KEY!

My car is 1999 SL500 US version.

It is possible to order the spare key at the MB dealership for the faclift models with newer immobiliser type (transponder chip)

The only key that's still available is the so called "wallet key" or "secondary key".
The key is beeing ordered to your VIN and comes prepared and ready for use.
It opens the locks with the blade and (most important) starts the engine. It does NOT have the remote control.

PART NUMBER 140 760 23 06
Price ~70euro
Waiting time: 10 days"

And a picture of it... Hope this helps?

Regards,
D
