r 129 roof issue

1990 r 129 300-sl-24
the roof will not go up properly
gets to the highest point (about halfway) and just stops.
Been looking around the car today, nothing out of the ordinary except the roof switch stays illuminated when I lock it all down and the car bleeps when I drive it
The oil was dirty so I changed that but that made no difference.
Any ideas ?
thx colin

When you say change the 'oil', I assume you mean the hydraulic fluid. How was the level in the tank before you change it ? If it was below normal you may have a leak in your system.

What RKH asked and you can also try to close it manually and lock everything in place and try to cycle it too see if that cures the problem.

Mercedes aren't for people who want to have one, it's for people who can have one.

Stopping 1/2 way up could be a problem w/power. Is the car running? Because if not, you may not have enough electrical juice.

And stopping 1/2 way up is where the pressure sensor changes pressure to slow the top when lowing toward the windshield. I understand that's what the hydraulic pressure thingie up on the front windshield is for.

r129 issue

I changed the oil because it was so dirty. The level was between the two marks.
The car is running so not power I think.
I need to look at the pressure change, maybe that could be the issue
thx

What type of hydraulic fluid did you use? When the roof goes up and stops does it go back when you press the button in reverse? If yes try to do that up and down move several times to bleed and clean the circuit and while your engine is running. If your fluid was really dirty as you said it was it may have clogged and restricted your circuit not allowing enough pressure to be built. As you do that check if there is any trace of fluid leaking on the ground in front and back of rear tires. You may also have leaking cylinders. What is the history of the car? Has the roof ever worked since you own it? Your car is a 1990 model and if the cylinders have never been replaced I bet you have leaking cylinders. Cycling the roof as suggested willl make a leak obvious.

Do not rely on the engine running to give you enough power, if the battery is old it still will not work properly, it is the amps not the voltage. I had this problem early last year. The solution was a new battery, problem solved.

Level is between the 2 marks, so there is not 'external' leak (unless it has been topped up just before you bought the car).

If 'Dirty oil' as in blackish color with residue at bottom of tank, that would indicate deteriorating seals. With no fluid loss, it could be internal leak between the 2 chambers which would result in pressure problem and that could explain your case of stopping at the peak.

I'm surprised at this, I know the soft-top mech draws plenty of power, I usually leave the engine running because of this.

But I'd always thought that the alternator would produce enough current to power it.

Richard,
That is what I thought, but accidentaly I was trying to close the roof and had the battery charger connected, it worked perfectly. Solution - new battery,no problems since.
