Top repair - Hudson Valley, NY

Hey Benzies,

Anyone have a decent top repair person up here? Am looking to have the plastic replaced, rather than go with a whole new top.

If there's no one up here then I'll consider a whole new top if it's affordable.

F'in people hear it's a MB and they think you have money coming out of your ass.

Anywhere in Dutchess, Ulster, Orange, Rockland, Westchester or even Western CT.

Any referrals and or help would be appreciated.

.

Albany is about an hour away, no biggie.

Called them and the guy acted like I gave him a Calculus question to solve. Thanks for trying.

If anyone knows anyone out there that does plastic window replacement, I'll broaden my area to anything Albany and below including NYC's 5 boroughs and Long Island.

Thanx.

Sorry. Unfortunately, you probably got the new co-owner. I try not to deal with him. I would have told you to ask for Greg, but if Chris answers and you ask for Greg, he gets a little indignant, like "why do you want Greg, I know everything". But he really doesn't.
I should have warned you.

If you still have your factory top remember the back part including the window is available at considerable savings.

Am not sure if it's factory or not, I just want to replace the plastic windows.
I used to do that with my boat every few years, but I guess Mercedes didn't talk to the boat people when they used this plastic, lol.

I know a guy in the UK does it, drive up and he does it in a few hours. There's also a guy that'll sell you a kit and a sewing machine to do it, but from what I've hear it leaks and comes undone when driving.

Well I'm still holding out for someone, I'll open my radius again to include anywhere drive-able within 2 hours of West Point.

Thanks

mahunt -
All I know is that the last 3rd can be replaced without having to remove the top - the OE on my car had that done because of the windows. Of course it is new canvas so if your top is a bit faded you will see a difference but it seems the factory, having to use plastic windows - foresaw this problem of people not wanting to have to replace the entire top just for the windows.

I got a chuckle out of a Mercedes book someone loaned me - it was obvious that the author knew next to nothing about 129s because in a caption with a car and convertible top he said that "it is obvious that the top hadn't been used in awhile judging from the crease by the rear window" - well, that "crease" is where the removable rear third joins the top.

As to how it fits on or how much they are, I can't say...

My top is original and in good shape, but the windows are yellowed and stiff, and the stitching has signed off where they fold when the top is down. I read somewhere that the side windows are a different thickness than the main back window ... can't remember which was thinner, but I'd guess the side ones as they seem to have the most severe fold.
I'd like to replace mine next winter without removing the top (have sail-making, canvas & upholstery experience). I see on ebay several kits for replacement windows, but can't get my head around spending that much for three pieces of vinyl, the stitching tool, and a roll of thread.
Has anyone removed their old windows, used them as patterns for cutting new ones from sheet vinyl, and installed them with the top still on the car? One at a time? Top up and latched or slightly open? Any other ideas?
My other option is to remove the aft end of the top to do the job, but ... that is a lot of work if It can be successfully done in place!
