open trunk, disconnect battery neg, pop off interior lining, once there you can disconnect plug to it, and remove brake light. It is a bit tricky at times to negotiate it out without breaking the bulbs or unit. Take your time.

Let me know where you find the lens and how much you paid for it. thanks

Please let me know also how this works out for you. Water is leaking into that light area into the trunk. May need to replace it.

The lens is held by plastic double pins with side hooks.
The hooks expend and get wedged on the white plastic bulb assembly.

So work from inside the trunk, with a small screwdriver, push the tinny hooks back in that will remove the lens.

The assembly is tricky & tight to remove.

I don't remember if it has screws, as I removed it years a go.
Mine was leaking so I put some tinny screws between the forks to hold it tight.

Regards,
aam.

Here's a couple of photos I took when replacing the lens on my '97. One shows the plastic fingers you need to squeeze in gently to release the lens, the other shows the small bolts holding in the whole unit, not sure if yours is identical.

Quick question

On my 1997, the last set of bulbs on the right side of the 3rd brake light are not coming on, what could be the cause? Are those bulbs replaceable?

Thanks in advance!

no, not from Mercedes at least...

you can either buy a new assembly (150 dollars) or take it apart and replace the LEDs and regulating diode

If you are going t replace the light anyway, Just pull on the lense and break it apart. The you will see three screws behind it that hold the light assemblt to the trunk frame. Remove the screws and the light will come out from the inside. You can also just purchase just the lense. In that case just remove the lense as described and insert the new one.

If you don't want to break the lens, you can remove the trunk liner. At this point you can see the plastic triangular tabs that hold the lens/gasket. Start at one end of the lens--very carefully wedge either a knife blade or small screwdriver under the lens from the outside thus putting a small bit of tension on the lens. Use a needlenose pliers and release that first set of tabs. Move your small wedge (could be a bigger one at this point) to the next set of tabs on the lens and repeat. Work your way across, releasing one set of tabs at a time and you will have it. The center four tabs are close together, so you will use a wider pliers to release those. You CAN work from both ends of the lens toward the center and release those final 4 tabs last.

After you get your lens/gasket off (hopefully intact) you will see the three screws that hold the reflektorhause (reflector housing) into the deck lid. They may be loose, so you may want a dab of blue Loc-tite when you re-assemble. You can get the lightbar/reflector housing out to the right and out the larger access hole. BTW you can easily remove the trunk upper latch and nut plate when you remove the trunk liner. Just ensure the nut plate goes back in the way it came out and note how your latch post is back in its correct position (assuming your trunk latched before)
