RE: 119 engine wiring harness

It was dry and crumbing and was making my car run rough. I had it replaced last week and my runs like new.

1995 M120 engine wiring harness

I've been following your plight...My 1995 SL600 is in the "OPERATING ROOM" today, after waiting for part for several weeks. I asked the tech to save the harness so that I might get some pictures to share with the group, but said since they partially covered it under warranty, it needed to be returned to Mercedes Benz. I am going to try to get some PICS anyway, before they send it out.

RE: 119 engine wiring harness End Result

Harness replaced. I got my car back yesterday. Other than having to re-set some of the electronics, infra red entry sync., radio, seats, etc., all minor, my car has never run smoother! I have more horses than ever experienced since I bought the car in August. The dealer had to replace the mass air sensor on one side along with everything else. I looked at the harness before they sent it back to Mercedes. It was a mess! Insulation crumbling off of interior wiring throughout, not just in the high temp. areas. Glad I got it done. I'm glad they covered most of the job also, as the part alone was over $2,000. I'm Back!

Defective wiring harness identification?

Is it possible to identify a potentially defective wiring harness on a '94 500SL that I am looking at buying? Where, exactly, are the wires/harnesses located underhood?

(I'm refering to the numerous posts on this topic)

The car has 77K miles and otherwise appears flawless.

Thanks!

RE: Defective wiring harness identification?

The wiring harness is defective on all '94s! In most instances you have to cut into the outer covering to see it (picture). If you like the car you are looking at, I would not let the wiring issue stop you. Just be aware that it will probably have to be replaced at some point in the car's life.

By the way, it is best not to disturb the wiring under the hood if you have an original harness. Because while much of the insulation has deteriorated, wires are not yet shorting together and only do so when they are moved around.

RE: Defective wiring harness identification?

Bob,

Thanks for the input on the 94 SL500 harness. Are there other years and/or models (ie: SL320,SL500 & SL600)to be advised on? What year was this finally corrected? Thanks, Gary 97 SL500.

RE: Defective wiring harness identification?

All Mercedes models produced during model-years 1993, 1994, and 1995 have faulty wiring harness insulation. Exception: 1993 six-cylinder models with KE fuel injection (300SL among these).

There are four harnesses to be concerned about: (1)the engine harness on the engine, (2)the engine harness on the body, (3)the starter/alternator harness, and (4)throttle motor assembly harness.

In some cases dealers have replaced these gratis out of good will. This is most likely to happen with a lower mileage car.

UPDATE: in July '09 a Mercedes tech told me that he is hearing of insulation failures of interior wiring as well.
