I must admit, I appreciate this car more and more every time I tackle something I have not done before, and learn something new every time. It is a project where every dollar counts (because it needs so much)... However, doing most everything in my own garage, one thing at a time, no rush - kinda therapeutic and rewarding!

D, you never sieze to amaze me. That is one big project. I bet you it will come out great. Keep us posted and show the finished product. Let me know what do you use to saw the peices together, are you using the sewing machine or by hand ?

Today, with confidence gained from this forum, I changed my cabin air filter. The (Canadian) dealer wanted $161 JUST for the filter. I bought one at a local parts store for $25 and changed it myself.

Baby steps...

You are too kind, Sir, I'm just a guy who is willing to try anything, at least once

Sawing - no my friend, purchased pre-fabed ready to install leather skin specifically sawn for pre-face lift R129.
Original untreated and neglected leather dried up, and ripped beyond repair on the forward center (very typical)

New covering arrived today, soft, pliable and brand new!

It took about 1.5 hours for the base/bottom, but If I had to do it again, now that I've done it an know where to pull/push/tuck and stretch, could probably do each bottom in less than an hour.

Leather would need to relax a little, will steam it tomorrow, will massage it a little for flawless fit then condition and good to go!

Very happy with results, new, supple beautiful leather instead of the mummified original skins!

That is a hefty fee, $161 not installed??? Even if it was installed, $161, ok, even with profit on the filter, an hour charge? Come on!!!

That finished seat looks better than new. I am glad I am done with my seats. I do not have to tell you - needs a lot of patience. All I did today, is finally got to polishing the engine block and did the wheels at the same time, and than ceramic coated the block and the wheels. We shall see if that stuff actually works. Also got a delivery yesterday from the O.O. after asking him about the copy I found. His son sent me a package with all the papers he was able to find in the garage for this car and among them (not in the best condition) were these two that I attached. Hopefully someone can tell me if these are authentic. The car does dyno at 475hp to the rear wheels.

Now, that built sheet my friend is When you bought the car, did you know that it had 6.0L AMG built engine? I remember you posted the time slip before, and my jaw dropped, the car looks great, but total sleeper (and that's the beauty of it)

D, I did not know, and I am still not sure. What got me thinking is when we started to tinker with the ECU and take the limiter off and replacing my TB, the DYNO, that is conected to the rear wheels, showed 475 and the guy who tested it and I looked at each other and he said that something must be wrong and he decided to recheck it it showed the same. Than he said "I wonder how much HP it had when it was new, because they tend to loose a little with time". There is a tremendous difference the way it drives now than before we started playing with the computer, my friend who is a genious with ECU's said that it must have been limited and/or restricted for what reason we do not know. He also said that who ever put the new exhuast for me put the wrong one, they put the regular MB r129 exhaust and that might be the reason why it is running at 475 and not higher, so now goes a search for the original AMG exhaust, hopefully not crazy expensive. Still would love a confirmation from someone who knows for sure. In any case I love the car no matter what it is. And I will keep it for as long as I can.

WOW, so you know, this is 1 in a million chance (figuratively speaking) for this to happen: Sees a car, falls in love with it, test drives it, falls in love with it even more, buys it and turns out to be a "sleeper 6.0L AMG built car

AMG singed letter, your VIN number, all the built specs to the engine, spark plugs to use, etc... I would indeed believe that its is authentic... There were few variations of AMG enginess for R129, but mostly/widely known versions were M119, not M113 (but that is even more exciting) Now, I'm sure you could inquire through AMG and ask then to authenticate it (if you care), but what you have is a wonderful wonderful BADASS sleeper R129!

For the exhaust, you may consider consulting with Jono at Atlanta Mercedes Repair He may put you in the right direction in terms of exhaust diameters, pieces and such

Regards,
D

So back on SL500 project... Front speakers sounded very decent, I was told original new Bose units were installed. Woofer - no good, swapped with the spare, swapped factory Bose amp, no good still, not going to bother tracing that anymore, will replace entire sound system when I strip the car in prep for new paint.

Band-aide: Small external monoblock amplifier (certainly not able to handle 2ohm factory speaker), so I've swapped the actual woofer driver for the home Bose unit (same Acoustimass design), but 4 ohm, and the now monoblock amp is happy, and I'm happy with the sound for now...

Very easy, direct swap, identical frame/design drivers:

Inside the box

And the new 4ohm driver calls it "home"

$15 swap, and bass is back (cost of the amp not counting, have many spares from many years of sound systems)!

D

D, to tell you the truth, the only reason I would like to know for sure and that is if I need to get any specific parts. But with all your projects - as usuall . I hope one year you will deside to come to the Mercedes meet in September. I would like to meet you and maybe pick your brane for some of my projects. It seems like there is nothing you can not do.
What did you use to saw the seat together what size needle and if a machine which one and which thread. I am thinking of redoing my 560SEC.
