Please help with resetting soft top controller

Hi all, Thanks for taking a look. I got a 97 SL500, and the car is stored in the winter months. I recently installed a new battery after attempts to charge the original battery pretty much failed. I think my guy charged the battery with it still hooked up to the car, which I know now is a "no,no". Since the new battery has been installed the illuminated swithes for both the converible top as well as the roll bar have been lit up and neither function now. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!! I searched this forum looking for this topic and didnt really have any luck and Im getting desperate. Thanks in advance..Eric

re: Please help with resetting soft top controller

Search here for "codes". In there somewhere, they tell you how to pull the codes and then clear the codes.
I went through the same thing. It is fairly easy to clear the codes. You may have to clear them more than once.

Thanks!

re: Please help with resetting soft top controller

I think the clear the codes thing has to do with the older SLs. Your 1997 needs to have the stuff reset, but all you need to do is get in the car, turn the key to pos. 2, hold the window buttons in the up position for five seconds after they have rolled up all the way, and then start the car and turn the steering wheel to full lock left, hold five sec, full lock right, hold five sec. The first should reset the windows, top roll bar, the second should reset the ASR etc. Good luck.

re: Please help with resetting soft top controller

Wannasl, Thanks for the help. I got the windows to reset with no problems but no luck with the rollbar and top. Any other ideas?? I would sure appreciate any help I could get with this one..I would hate to take it to the dealer for them to skin me $300 to do something simple.

Thanks, Eric

re: Please help with resetting soft top controller

The thing I don't like about '96 and newer cars is that you need an expensive scan tool to reset codes for the top controller. If this were a '95 or older model, all you would need is a paper clip.

Eric, you almost certainly are going to have to take the car to a pro and have the code(s) reset. I was in your situation with a '96 and my dealer charged me a full labor hour to do this 5-minute task. You may find an independent who will charge nothing at all. At any rate, I would establish up-front that all you want is the code reset and you expect to be charged no more than 1/4-hour for labor.

Bob, Thanks for the reply..I sure appreciate the help. What are the chances that the soft top control module is out? Ive been told different things from different people (depending on what they are trying to sell me). Any help would be great..Thanks, Eric

re: Please help with resetting soft top controller

Same thing happened to me. Took the car in to a bodyshop with no problems on the soft top. It came out with errors and the chiming. I too am getting conflicting stories but the Merc garage are saying that I need to replace the controller. I am resigned to having to do this. So it sounds as if it is possible that you will have to replace it.

re: Please help with resetting soft top controller

Yeah..might be. Im taking it in today to see about the codes and I guess I go from there. I did find a place that sells rebuilt controllers for $450/exchange..so thats good news. I think the dealer wanted $1300 or something crazy like that. Thanks for the reply!

re: Please help with resetting soft top controller

Finally got this handled. Took the car to a local shop that is good with Mercedes and they cleared the codes and everything is perfect now...cost me 1 hour labor charge and came to $73 or something. Thanks to everyone for your help and advice..Hope I can return the favor someday!

re: Please help with resetting soft top controller

I've tried that guy but his waiting list is quite long for a rebuilt controller. The chiming is driving me mad though.
Does anyone think it is worth me taking it to another garage? Even though the garage I took it to are saying it needs a controller, it works perfectly apart from the illumninated switch and the chiming. Everyone else seems to just reset the codes when this happens and it goes away. I get the feeling they could be stringing me along a bit?? But then I don't want to waste any more money than i need. What do you all reckon?
