Sl 500 or SL 600?

Hi all! I am new to this forum so if I am repeating a question that's been already dealt with, please don't kill me [;)].

Decied to buy a R129 SL 500 or SL 600. Have targeted models 1996 or later because of the ESP and active suspension introduced in 1996. Not to mention the 5-gear automatic gearbox, also introduced in 1996. The question is: SL 500 or SL 600? It's clear that insurance/road tax will be higher for the V12. However, I am more concerned about the following - does the SL 600 have some intrinsic disadvantages and deffects (engine, transmission, etc.) that are absent for the SL 500. There are none as far as I know, but your opinion will be PRECIOUS! What I gain buying an SL 600? OK, the SL 500 I would buy would have ESP and active suspension so the basic difference between it and an SL 600 would be the engine power and some gimmicks (wooden steering wheel, etc.). But does the SL 600 perform substantially better on the road than the SL 500? And is it worth the extra expences?

Thank you very much in advance!

No, worse if you ask someone that have driven both, but then we are not talking about crusing in a straight line. More power but it´s also heavier, so the performance is similar. Choose car depending on condition and options.

No supercharge, no turbo. Just real power. Luke says -A obsidian black SL60 ///AMG and S600L from -96. That´s his cars, and the force is with him!

RE: Sl 500 or SL 600?

Vladislav,

I have a 1997 SL500, purchased in 8/1/04. I think you are on track with going for years 1996 and above. I also did alot of reaserch on the SL500 vs SL600. The SL600 is real nice, all the additional leather and wood in the interior is great. The SL600's MPG and accelleration is not all that different from the SL500 until you really step on the gas. The Sl600 only uses 8 cylinders until you really step on the gas and kick in the additional 4 cylinders. So if you looking for high speed and plan on driving that way go for th SL600. If your looking for 50/50 town/freeway driving go with the SL500. The real issue is cost of maintaining. I spoke with a Mercedes mechanic and he told me to expect 25% to 50% more cost and any service work. If you have never owed a Mercedes, I can tell you it is not a cheap automobile to maintain. However, if you properly maintain they will go forever. Myself, I an a car freak and maintain and detail my cars as if they were children. Just my 2 cents... Good Luck, Gary

Is that true? I don´t think so ....However, even if the SL600 really steps on it, the difference is not so big. SL500 at top (picture).

RE: Sl 500 or SL 600?

I've owned all three at different times. The SL600 is by far the best of breed. Ride is different--not really heavier but just feels stronger. The 300 was a toy--it didn't compare to the 500 or 600. I'm currently driving a 2000 SL600 with the Sport Package and it the best driving/riding automobile I've ever owned. Besides that everyone notices the V12 logos on each side and it's a blast to see them point and comment--and pleasant to explain that yes--it really is a V12.

The GHP also likes the car---they can pick it out of a crowd in a NY second.
