AC conversion

My AC on my 74 450SL. doesn’t work. The mechanic said the compressor is shot and also I have to convert to 134. Does this mean I need a totally new system?
Are there any good after market systems?
And about how much should this cost? I got a quote of labor and materials:$3000.00. Not sure if that is OEM or aftermarket

$3000 seems a bit rich but you haven't indicated in your profile where you are. The evaporator etc behind the dash don't normally need changing. Just the compressor, drier, hoses etc. There are a lot of threads on this issue if you do a search.

As you are new here please note the top sticky called EGv107. Carl's excellent thread on HVAC repair is linked there.

R134 is terrible in these cars. It works good until the outside temperature gets above 95 to 97, then you might as well open the windows.

I hate to hear that. I live in West Texas where it exceeds 100 deg for weeks at a time.

I would also take a look at the Old Air Products Pro6ten compressor. At one time, the Four Seasons compressor was sold by Delco with a Delco tag. They discontinued it because of a lot of returns, they can be hit or miss. The Pro6ten compressor is a direct bolt-in 10 cylinder rotary, no bracket mods needed. It will also run on ester oil if you so choose. The Four Seasons does not like ester oil

I thought I was going to have to change the system in my 90 560sec; however, I learned there are plenty of people who can restore and preserve the old R12 systems. From my experience, there is no reason to convert. Just fix the problem with the system, if there is one--usually the issue is just a leak or a blown motor--and replace the R12 with Freeze12.
