Fan Clutch

So,on my 79 450 sl I'm wondering if fan clutch is working correctly. There is plenty of resistance when I spin it buy hand it only spins a blade or two. But,when I start the car cold, after about a minute or two the fan will pickup speed noticeably. Then after a minute or two of that it goes back to regular speed. While driving I never hear it speed up again,no matter the temp.....

your fan clutch is probably bad. although check your radiator with an ir temp gauge because on your car its probably original.

what temps does your car get up to?

it should be around 87 deg even in traffic although your car probably has farenheit temp gauge so just over 175

at normal temp I can hear mine roar when pulling away from traffic in like 70 deg weather

Christuna, thanks for the reply. My car normally runs right around 175 when moving. But as soon as stop in traffic the temp starts to climb and will go to 212 and a little beyond. I just put a new auxiliary fan in and ran a manual switch so I can turn it on when I want. But, the way the fan clutch acts has me suspecting that is not working correctly. The aux. fan did not work at all so I needed to replace that anyway...

that's exactly what mine did when my fan clutch failed. your radiator is most likely ok.
