1989 560SL Climate Control Unit Question

Long ago, I removed the climate control unit and am now at the point to putting it back in. When I go the car, the climate control system didn't work so I have no idea if the push button switch unit works. On either side of the unit are pin connectors that are identical. In the dash are the two female connectors, one has a short wire bundle and the other is longer. I am not sure which connector goes where. Assume the short wire bundle one connected the location behind the fan push button and the longer wire bundle on connected behind the temperature wheel.

I have connected them both ways and nothing appears to work. To start this fun, I at least want to have the connectors in the right spots.

Anyone know of a thread that helps diagnose the system?

If I leave the small wire bundle unplugged and plug in the long one behind the temperature control, the defrost will come on when the button is pushed (fan on high, compressor engaged and is hot air, which I believe is how its supposed to be). When I plug the short on back, it shuts off the defrost.

I've checked the fan it works fine, thanks for any tips

I was just in there myself this weekend... the short cabled one goes to the right side as you face it, so yes, the side that has the fan speeds selector.
