500SL vs 560SL? Which should I buy?

Looking for some advice. I currently have a UK (right hand drive) 1986 500SL which I keep at my house in Spain. I have owned the car for 4 years.

My uncle has a US Spec 1987 560SL in Spain that he is thinking of selling. I was debating buying his car & selling mine as 1) The 560 is Left Hand Drive, which is better for Spain & 2) It is registered on Spanish licence plates, which is better really.

What are peopleís opinions of the 500 VS 560? I have driven the 560 a couple times & never noticed much difference in performance, but is there a noticeable difference? If so, can the catalytic converters etc be removed to free up some extra power?

I would change the US bumpers & head light for Euro Spec ones. Does anyone know the cost of this, Iíve heard everything from $2k - $8K

Thanks in advance

Headlights seem to be $1500+. I donít know how many euros it takes, but also new lights will be more expensive. The Vietnamese stainless bumpers might be the cheapest way to go.

The tri-y exhaust manifolds from the 500sl would be ideal. The 500sl has a higher power rating than the 560sl, perhaps due to the exhaust. I donít know. Ironically the w126 500 is less power than the 560. Go figure. Maybe itís all about the tri-y pipes that are on the 500sl r107.

227 vs 240 hp is not huge. It might not be worth the trouble.

It sounds like your decision might be made. Sell the 500sl in the UK and call it a victory.

I'd love to own a right hand drove car in the US. I don't go through drive throughs often, pay tolls, and there's an in n out through with the window on the right that just aches for a RHD car to go through.

Thanks for the your help. Haven't entirley made my mind up. Just bouncing around ideas but I'm pretty tempted to be honest.

What are the options for Euro spec conversion? You mention "Vietnamese stainless bumpers", do you have a link to this company? Do you know anything about them, are they goo quality etc?

Thanks again!

Well it seems I've found a buyer for my car then

I've had lots of RHD & LHD in the "wrong" country and it doesn't really bother me expect for road tolls, drive throughs & car parks. It's not a deal breaker for me, but I think LHD would be better.

Euro headlights are about 1500 euro, the bumpers are about 1400 euro ex import duties.

Mercedes W107 R107 EU style stainless steel polished bumper 1971-1989

Good luck with your choice!

How hard can it be?

Sigh

My wife would slit my throat in my sleep if I got another r107. I like the 500SLs more because you guys get that little air fender in the rear, euro headlights, as well as the air dams up front.

May I interest you in a US spec 380sl that's clearly not an equal trade whatsoever to your 500SL? The only benefit you'd get are cheaper carbon taxes since the EPA forced us to choke our cars. Oh and US spec headlights and bumpers. Might be useful for bumper bashing other motorists and getting away with it!

I've been watching the progress of some of the M117 tuners abroad and your SL is a prime candidate for their deviancy. Elba Engineering has a fuel rail kit for these cars that would boost your fuel economy up to 24-25 mpg and they'd also sell you a biturbo kit to turn that fuel economy into teens <img src="https://www.benzworld.org/forums/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif" border="0" alt="" title="thumbsup" class="inlineimg" />

Maybe another day sadly.

Apologies "Elbe Engineering". Damn phone autocorrect.

Here's a link:
Elbe Engineering

M116 / 117 / 119 EFI kit | Elbe Engineering

M117 Twin-turbo kit | Elbe Engineering

They're based in Estonia.

Too be fair, it might be impossible to put the twin turbo kit in our cars without hacking at the body. I forgot how roomy our sedan brothers have it.

In other news, i've been thinking about getting a license plate that reads "MNY PIT".

Very interesting, with today's fuel prices, this would pay itself off within a short time.

I've also seen a company based in Poland - K Jet Killers.
