To a purest it's sacrilege. Have to think the original motor was toast and not like they dropped an LS in a '56 300SL gullwing.

But better than a 350 transplant and looks tastefully done.

My bet is it is one amazing car to drive. Would not mind having it in my stable.

Did you read the article? I can't agree with that at all. Updating one of the best made chassis with a near bullet proof, race proven and durable engine with modern electronics that get's a car 30mpg and amazing performance is a great resto-mod.

Wow I respect the hell out of this thing, and I’d *love* to give it a drive. Can you imagine actually hauling a** by modern standards in an r107!

Having said that, I got my SL specifically because I prefer a time machine, devoid of modern concessions. But I realize that opinion is entirely subjective.

While Roncallo has a V-12 in a 107, I believe it is Mercedes, but don't know for sure. I wouldn't have anything but a Mercedes engine in my 107. If I didn't have a Mercedes that was ALL Mercedes, I wouldn't have that Mercedes. If the engine in my 107 was 'toast', I would spend what I needed to spend to get a rebuilt 4'5. Modifications to the engine are allowed, as long as I looks like the original engine.

More than half the reason I love my 107 is figuring out how to make Bosch D-Jetronic run well. I love the resto-mod concept for a 60's muscle car without the original driveline. I also love the M120 or any other update MB engine swap in a 107.

Like Joser, I would like to drive this car but it is not something I would do if my engine blew up.

My $.02

I'm not sure of my opinion on this.

On the one hand I love my PIG and it's M110 and take pride on keeping it reliable enough to do 11,000 km road trips.

On the other hand, I like the idea of having a 107 with a reliable drivetrain that can kick some serious ass.

So in conclusion.....maybe have one of each.

It's really very simple. If you're a purist you keep the car stock. If you want something special by way of modern performance (and have the very serious bucks to attain same) then the world of opportunity is wide open. The choice of a non Mercedes engine renders the car non stock. The choice of a different Mercedes engine also renders the car non stock - so what? What really counts is the amount of sheer enjoyment the car provides to a driver. Does anything else really matter?
