83 500SL - Possible New Water Pump Needed

Hello all,

We have noticed minor leaks forming around our water pump. I am going to assume that this means we need a new one. I called a trusted local MB shop and he advises me that when the pump starts to go, it will start leaking around a weep hole that is built in to the pump. Is this true

What is frustrating is that MB has discontinued their pump for this car. At least that is what I am finding. I would prefer to keep everything as original as possible. However, if I go aftermarket can you advise on which brands are better?

Thanks in advance,

Walt

The water pump spins on a bearing. There is a seal to keep it from leaking.

When the seal is compromised, it will leak out the weeping hole. This is the warning that the bearing is not far behind.

What is the part number of the pump?

And keeping everything as original as possible will become harder to do the older along the car gets.

If you buy a pump and they want your old one a core exchange....they will be rebuilding it.

We don't have vehicle data for the 1983 500SL Euro model, but that water pump may be the same as on the USA 1983 380SL, for which we have Graf and Meyle pumps.
