New to BenzWorld Not my 560SL

I have owned the 560SL for five years and have never had an issue. It has 77K on the clock.

This morning I took it out for a drive and the speedometer and odometer stopped working. The tachometer works like a champ.

I spent some time on this site searching for advice but my search skills must be lacking! Can anyone point me in the right direction. I love this car, my first Benz.

Not an expert but I’ve read about some plastic gears in the speedo/odometer that degrade and fail. If you do a search on your problem, especially in the sticky “the encyclopedia germanica” (spelling?), you should find your answer!

I'm thinking speedometer cable, but I'm no expert either.

If you haven't tried searching the 107 files and would like to...

Go to the main page for the 107 forum where all the threads are listed

Take note of the 2 black & blue bars running horizontally across the top of the page

On the right side of each black bar, there's a "search this forum" button

A small box will open up and you can type the search topic before clicking "GO"

The results will be one or more threads on the requested search topic...
unless there are no threads for the requested topic

If that happens, try using different search words

I've rarely run across a search that didn't yield at least some information

Here's a link for the search result using the words "speedometer and odometer failure"
https://www.benzworld.org/forums/sea...rchid=26571867

In the interim, some of the guys are likely to offer some advice of their own.

Good Luck!

The odometer gears that break do not affect the speedometer. Mine were broken when I got my car, but the speedo still worked. The 560sl also has an electronic speedometer, so there is no cable. I would check the fuse first, but not likely if the the rest of the cluster is operating. Sorry I can't help more.

I had the same issue with the Speedometer in my 1986 560SL. Tried to fix it but could not.
Was not sure how to troubleshoot it - its an electronic speedometer, not cable.
I purchased another cluster ... not cheap.
If you figure out whats wrong with yours, post the solution.

Carl

Gears went bad. They always do. It's a very simple fix and shouldn't cost you more than $25.

Read this thread by the esteemed Dr. Nobby Benz-MD https://www.benzworld.org/forums/r-c...-tutorial.html

It has everything you need to fix this.

Good luck!

True if only the odometer/trip meter but his speedometer is also not working. Franklyspeaking and Carl were correct.

I'm not familiar with the auto trani on the 560SL. But there should be a pick up / harness connected somewhere on the trani that the speedo and odo get their signal from.

I would start there and work your way towards the cluster.

I would like to apologize. The speedometer works and I believe the second post below is the problem. I will work on it this weekend.

I can't thank you folks enough and again, I am sorry for the erroneous first post. I am what happens when cousins marry.

Best.
