Yes, good point. I replaced all belts and hoses as well as the water pump. I thought the brake cylinders would be leaky, but they are working fine!?

FYI check the voltage regulator. When mine failed the car exhibited most of the symptoms of yours. Car would heat up and then VR would intermittently cause a loss of sufficient voltage, so fuel pump quit, etc, usually while on the freeway. My indy had experienced this problem a number of times before on other customers' cars, so that was the first thing he checked, and he was right. Simple, low cost repair.

mine is the same. Unreliable, always this problem, that problem, never runs well for any decent period of time.I think this is why the hagerty valuation of these cars is going steadily down. They look great, NEVER run right and in the end not worth the enormous pain in the ass of chasing rabbits down holes to fix endless fussy issues. Get it running well and sell it!!!! Thats what I'm going to do IF I could ever get that darned thing to run well for more than three trips to the store!!

Don't want to tempt providence but my baby starts every spring with the first turn of the key and continues to do so throughout the spring/summer top down season. I'm guessing many 107 owners have the same experience.Admittedly I have to spend coin on it from time to time but it runs like a sewing machine, I would drive it anywhere. I have probably averaged less than $1,000 per year on repairs and maintenance once I got the car in the condition I wanted. The previous owner lied about a lot of things but a rust free straight body was not one of them and the engine is tough enough to chop wood.

I agree with freshhairfiend, (maybe it's the M110 engine?) mine has been solid since we got it. Not that things haven't broken (water pump, P/S pump, fuel line) but it's never stranded us (so far) and when anything needed repair, everything that came off (belts, hoses, etc) was refreshed or replaced. With vehicles of this vintage, everything made of rubber or with seals will fail sooner or later so you just hope to keep ahead of them. It's all part of the adventure, right?

After I got my 560SL, I put about $1500 into maintenance and the front end. Since then, it's only needed fluids. I wouldn't hesitate to jump in it and go on a trip. (Though I would check the oil at every fill-up.)

Yeah, these cars can be cantankerous. They will straighten out with some work, and when they're right, they're really fun cars.

"Engineered like no other car in the world." That's both a bug and a feature.

The most serious problem you have right now is not with the car, but with your wife. You mention that your wife (SWMBO) want to get her hands on the car. This concerns me greatly, more than any faulty ECU or relay. I recommend that you get a buddy to pretend-steal the car, get a garage for it (and maybe you too) on the other side of town, and tell her that the police can't locate the car. You'll have to live two separate lives, one with your wife and one with the SL, but it'll be worth it.
