Time to put the SL on a diet

Finally found some time to start mounting the Euro bumpers I had sitting in my office for over a month. Started yesterday evening taking the rear bumper off. Today I was able to mount the Euro rear bumper and then moved on to the front. I was able to completely take off the “park bench but ran out of time to finish the job. Will have to wait till next weekend.

Subscribed. This is on my list. Which bumpers are you using?

As far as I know they are original MB bumpers. The shiny parts are chrome plated not polished stainless steel.

How'd you disconnect the turn signals? I take it from your picture that you simply undid the four bolts holding the bumper shock absorbers on, right? And you left the plastic air grille in place? The FSM calls for removing it before you start to remove the bumper.

And how did you get the brackets holding the inner ends of the bumper extensions off the fenders?

Remove the two side extension from the bumper. They are attached to the bumper with 3 screws, 2 are accessible from underneath the bumper, one of the nuts is located inside the bumper, just take a flashlight and look inside the bumper, you’ll see the nut (13mm socket). Pull the extensions gently off the bumper and slide towards the doors. Should come right off.
With the side extensions off you can easily access the two nuts (10mm wrench) that hold each turn signal. Remove the turn signals.
The mounting bolts for the fog lights can easily be accessed from below the bumper (10mm socket).
Unbolt the bumper from the car.
To completely remove the turn signals you have to remove the headlights and unplug them.

To remove the standoff brackets that hold the bumper extensions away of the fender, just jack up the car and look inside the fender from underneath, you will see a sheet metal bracket held down by a nut, remove the nut and the sheet metal bracket will come off. Remove the standoff bracket.
If you are planing on replacing your US bumper with another US bumper, there is no need to unplug the turn signals from the headlights. There is also no need to remove the standoff brackets that hold the bumper extensions away from the fender.
I only removed the turn signals completely because I am planing on using a different type.

Thought I have a little fun this morning and used an old bathroom scale to weigh the bumpers.

US front bumper - approx. 46lb
Euro front bumper - approx. 26lb

Rear bumper difference is probably about the same.

I prefer the look of small bumpers and round headlights. I'm tracking this thread and others to see if this is something a novice can tackle.
