I can not point to any rust, but the garish paint hack would indicate that something quite horrid is being hidden. The interior looks to have hosted multiples of the miles reported. Or maybe some really fat gal and her purse puppy put all the miles on it. The nasty and dirt all over shows nobody took care of the car, because a fan would have spiffed the car up all over in an attempt to garner real value.
I think this car is painted Icon Gold metallic, which, IIRC is code 419. I don't think many cars were painted that color new. And it WAS that bright. A very bright and yellow gold color. Garish is a proper description, as I recall.

Yes Rowdie this car is obviously a 350SL as stated by the 107 043 vin. I honestly cannot see anything negative about this car except for the ridiculous asking price. One crack in the dash and a drivers seat that has been used for its intended purpose, and the seats are two tone I believe. A friend of mine has a low mileage 450SL in almost the same colour, slightly lighter and it looks very classy in my opinion. I've seen a few SLC's over the years in original Icon Gold and in the flesh look absolutely fantastic.

Apparently it was not obvious to the member I quoted.

Really my question wasn't about whether it was a 450 or a 350, it was about the AC. The seller said it has AC and the controls look to be from the older type AC I see in the EGv107. Or, is this how the controls look when you don't have AC? (I'm still talking 1980).

Sorry if my response in post 9 was not clear. Regardless of 350, 450, 5.0 or 280, in 1980 ACC was an option that all US models got. Euro models could either have the base manual controls, or the ACC option. Is that more clear?

Personally, I think the manual controls are more desirable (because the ACC is so problematic).

Fonzi is correct. This one is a 350SL with optional A/C but not Automatic Climate Control (ACC). You can see the A/C compressor in one of the engine shot.

I’ve corresponded with someone who has seen it in person, and they said the pictures are old pictures and car is no longer in the shape shown in the pictures. Maybe the pictures were right after a (not top-notch?) paint job. Apparently the car is rusty.

Thanks Fonzi and Rowdie - now I get it - I didn't realize that you could get Air Con without the Automatic Climate Control. And I swear I haven't started drinking - yet! (Game starts in 3 hours - then the drinking commences)

Cars in the 70’s were painted in all kinds of different colors, now the color choices are much more conservative unless it is some special edition vehicle.
