I have a question for Franco380, and anyone else with experience with 16” rims on a r107.

When I bought my car it came with replica 600sl rims in the size 7,5”x17” ET35 with 225/45-17 tires. It also came with the original 15’ rims with just about brand new 15 year old tires. I replaced the 17” tires ont the replica rims, because I thought they looked really good and different and put the originals in my shed. So I drove it like this from May til September and I was reasonably happy with the ride. A little bit harsh sometimes over expansion joints but after all they do have quite a low sidewall. And they looked good. Then in September for no good reason I decided to clean up and mount my original set. Man, what a difference!! A much better ride experience, much, much smoother, no longer tracking and finding every uneven piece of asphalt, pothole, etc. I will not go back to the 17”.
With the 225/45-17 I would kind of subconsciously tighten my body going over a railroad track or any larger pothole, or steer around uneven surfaces.
And this is with the “new” 15 year old Dunlop sp4000. Not one crack or or sign of age on them.

Any way, Franco380, (or anyone else on 16’s) how do you find the ride quality with your r129 evo1 8” x 16 “ wheels. Did you drive your car with the original 15’s? Comparison?

Thanks, in advance!

Hey Cans,
Interesting you ask that question. I just drove my 380 around today and noticed what you describe with the addition of some vibrating above 55 mph. They have been balanced recently and I tend to question the 10mm spacers I had to use. I have a set of 15" 560 wheels that came on the car and no such issues were felt. I think I'm going back to the 15" wheels as the car seemed and drove somewhat "happier" with them.

Did you check the upper control arm bushings - on the German forum they describe a 60mph shimmy when those get worn out. DTL/sl-edition sells some improved poly ones that supposedly last a lot longer than the original ones and give better control overall (at a price...).

Thank you for the reply franco380.
I don’t experience any shimmy.
Does anyone else on 16”-rims experience that the car is tracking joints on uneven roads? What’s your tire dimensions?
Or a generally worse ride and driving experience on anything but standard set-up? I’m hesitant to get a set of 16’s to replace my 17’s if it doesn’t
ride as well as it does on original set-up. As I mentioned in an earlier post my 15” tires are 15 years old, I imagine it would be even better on new,
more flexible tires as well.
Another option may be to a narrower tire for my 17’s like 205’s since they are only 7,5” wide. I suspect it’s the width rather than the diameter, that
is the culprit for the diminished ride experience.
Any opinions?

I am running 225/45-17s. I believe the ride was a bit plusher on the previous 205/65-15s but I don't find the 17s objectionable.

The shorter (hence stiffer) sidewall causes the harsher ride. Narrowing the tire will make it worse, since the sidewall height = the width x the aspect ratio.

You raise a good point dugald,
225/45 would have a sidewall height of 101mm or 4 inches, and a 205/45 would be 92 mm or 3 5/8 , so 9mm lower or approx 1/3 of an inch.
In comparison, original 205/65 are 133 mm or almost 5 1/4 inch.
