Thanks again, rowdie. I am confident-enough that is the problem that I have already ordered the part and a spare. I'm betting it fell off when that front top-to-windshield seal/weatherstrip was replaced and it was not noticed. This way, when we do remove the hardtop for the season, I'll have a new one in hand! RE my quick-reply up above, to JS5D, it still (to me) seems a little odd the rear side top locks don't hold it down enough to prevent this . . . . but, still I am pretty confident this is the culprit . . . . . Don

Why yes - I don't have a rubber washer for sure. Excellent, will order one now and fit asap. Thanks very much!

My theory is now that the thumping is the hard top moving down (dt weight and compression of the seal) then it jumps up and it is the securing stud stopping the upward motion that makes the noise (or at least that is the theory).
It's your car's way of saying:

"Get that fucking top off of me and get some fresh air!"

Hi Rowdie,

Following your excellent advice (and of course also from Nobby) I ordered the offending part for Europarts.com for about $25 (because they had it in genuine MB) and it just arrived.

Interestingly this is a lot more sophisticated than I expected. It has some sort of build in seal lip - almost like somebody has put a lot of thought into this. I attached an image of the item (hope it works).

so for the installation from the picture I presume the orientation is such that the seal wedges into the car, like pointing down if you see what I mean?

Regards. JS5D

What is the part number for that? Should be 107 997 17 81 Site supporting vendor mboemparts has it for $12.58 107 997 17 81. If you go to the Supporting Vendors page of BenzWorld.org I think they have a code for free shipping in some instances.

Hi Rowdie,
I checked that number on EPC and it seems same is used for 350/450/380 SLs. Checked my hardtop and it doesn't have one! Never noticed a problem, but HT seldom goes on.

In same section, I saw another item 1079973281. Also a grommet. It's shown next to the heated rear window pane. Maybe where cables come through?

yes P/N 107 997 17 81, which if you do a google search gives various forms of grommets, nothing as elaborate as the one I received. It was $16.75 with some shipping cost. Will check out MBOEMparts next time thanks.
