Quick question about warning lights

Hello there. Am I right in thinking that the strip of warning lights are meant to illuminate when the key is turned to the first position? They currently don't apart from the battery light.

Any ideas for the first course of action? fuses? the bulbs themselves?
Many thanks
Ben

I'm trying to think what's there............turn signals, parking brake, charging system.......
does your parking brake and light signals work?

In any event if you haven't changed the bulbs in the cluster.....change them. You'll be plesently surprised at how much brighter the cluster will be.

Here's some pointers.

You forgot mention adding a ground wire from the cluster to a good metal ground.
As long as you have the cluster out you might as well do it.

Thanks for the link. Will investigate. Hoping I didn't need to remove the wheel but looks straight forward. Dumb question: oil line? Do all cars have a physical oil line connecting to the cluster? Surely not.

So, all the warning lights should be illuminated with the key is turned to the first position?
Cheers
Ben

oil lines went electronic some time AFTER 1980, but I don't know when. Easy to undo, just don't crank the engine with it unhooked or if you do take pictures.
My 1988 lights ALL the warning lamps when first cranked, but I don't recall the 1980 doing that.

Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a Rain dance.

Thanks for the reply. Okay, that makes sense. The ABS light doesn't come on among others. I'm cynically assuming bulbs were removed to make the car appear in better fettle than it is.

Might have been. My dad's SL600 had several bulbs removed - including the Check Engine light - to make it look like it was in better shape than it was.

When I die, I want to go quietly in my sleep, like Grandpa.
Not screaming, like the people in his car.

Yep. Some bulbs are missing. Here's a pic of one of them. Which sort are these for when I ask at the store?
Cheers
