560sl valve adjustment?

I recently purchased an 86 560sl with 83k.

The top end is making more noise than I would think it should.

I am still waiting on my repair manual but wondered if you can manually adjust the valves?

The exhaust also has some issues, and I think I read here somewhere that a bad exhaust manifold can make similar noise.

It sound like a smooth singer sewing machine now.

Any thoughts?

The valve train is hydraulic, with adjustment via varying thickness hockey puck like shims between the rocker arm and valve stem. Although quite doable, it is not simply a turn the wrench procedure to adjust the valves, and it requires several special tools. I think member bandit96 may have them available.

You don't do a valve adjustment like on the old M110 on a M117 (560 SL) The valve clearance is automatically adjusted by hydraulic compensators. If you need to change a rocker arm, the basic position of the hydraulic element should be checked with a go-no-go gauge. If out of spec, shims can be added (as mentioned above). Reason for changing a rocker arm is often a ticking sound from the valve train. This is primarily caused by poor lubrication over time (oil feeder tube clogged or out of position).

See this thread for a more comprehensive intro: https://www.benzworld.org/forums/r-c1...der-3-4-a.html

If you want to do a traditional valve adjustment, search for @nobby 's excellent DIY write up on this.

There are many "low mile" 380SL's and 560SL's. The problem is that they are "low mile" because the odometer quit working decades ago.
