Exclamation Example of a bad 107 front sub-frame, subject of recall. Pictures of crack failure.

I finally got around to disassembling my 1976 450SL (107) parts front sub-frame. I was planning on cleaning it up and then swapping it out into my 1980 280SL (107). Here is what I found (good thing I also have (had) a 350SLC parts car). Perhaps the front sub-frame on it will be in better shape.

This exact failure is the subject of a recall. If there are no cracks MB will weld brackets on the hole flanges. If it is cracked they are supposed to replace it. I'm going to see if I can get MB to replace the sub-frame - for free even though it is not still on the car.

Wow you should have drove the car to the dealer first for the subframe recall. The deal is as I understand it, If your subframe is actually cracked when they go to do the service they have to replace it with a new 560SL strengthened type. They you would have had a new one for your 280SL

There was no driving it when I got it. It was a parts car from the get-go. Perhaps if I take the title and sub-frame to a dealer and say I'm rebuilding it myself, and "Look what I found!" They can check on their system and see it has not yet been done - that way they'll have a VIN to charge it to. I figure I've got nothing to loose.

That may actually work. It may even work better if you have an MB Tech do it. He might be able to swing a warranty claim out of it.

I understand MB doesn't honor the recall for Euros, unfortunately.

I've heard that, but my 450SL is a U.S. model.

I haven't tried yet. I've been too busy stripping cars at Johnhef's place.
