That's the first suspicion apparently.

A genuine tragedy. Let's just hope they can salvage enough to rebuild and not choose to bulldoze the ruins and build some modern monstrosity instead.

That seems to be the case so far.

Spire collapsed, trying to save works of art from inside, but conditions very difficult...

The building itself is stone masonry, the roof and spire can be rebuilt to modern standards. This is a national treasure and I'm sure the French will do whatever it takes to get it back right.

My only question is why would this building had no sprinklers, unless it was off doing the renovation.
