simonvito hey i think my problem was a stiff linkage

i had someone bleed van from engine nipple, the pedal stayed down for ages but they got it eventually-i read somewhere else here the only way to bleed vito was with a pressure bleed..with a kit that forces fluid into system..something to do with brake assist pump..not really sure if the bleed made any difference to my issue

how do you bleed the clutch ??? on my 1997 vito i have open bleed nipple on side of gear box held my finger over the nipple while some body was pumping the clutch pedal, i have filled the reservoir to the top no matter how much i pump the pedal the level does not seem to be dropping
is this the correct way ???????????????????
if any body can help would be extremly gratefull

gixxerpat Have you held the clutch to the floor for 30secs..does it stay there or come back up...?

dieseljo Have a look at the linkage between the clutch pedal and the clutch master cylinder. my gear changes were not quite right for a few days before the spigot on the pedal broken taking the master cylinder rod with it. I think it had been loose for a while.

i disconnected both ends of the 2 gear linkage cables and gave them a good greese on the ends under the ashtray..i could not get to the cable in the engine -it seems sealed..
i also pumped the clutch and it seemed to work fine afterwards so air in the system it could very well be..and as fut=futher proof i just read while looking for bleeding instructions that the clutch and brakes share the same hydrolic system and a month or two ago the van was experiencing greater brake pedal travel..this seemed to last a few days then go away..so maybe its just an air bubble stuck in the system somewhere..
..ill continue my search for bleed directions..gather i may have to make some type of tool..?

ive pumped the clutch a few times and nothing has changed, but the same hot cold issue remains, which has more to do with engine running or changing gear imediatly after a start..killed the engine at lights today to see what was what and had to hold brake while starting to keep van still, engine sounded strained as it was not free totally via clutch..once going i was grand and no issues...have greesed the linkage but not taken the cables yet so will give that a go next

Hodgy Have you tried pumping the clutch pedal a few times before trying to engage gear?

I was wondering if there is a little air in the system, if pumping the pedal helps then try bleeding the clutch.

Other than that it sounds more like a selector problem than a clutch problem, perhaps taking the cables off and greasing them and the tower mechanism will help?

have been looking around and im still not sure what to do

this only started a few days ago..and has come and gone,

i cant get onto gear once ive started,any gear..

have to kill engine and put in gear and then start (once or twice the van has shifted a bit while doing this,while clutch still down)..once moving im fine-apart from once when i could not get into 5th and the other gears needed an extra shove to engage
however mostly one im going the gear change is the same as it used to be
(i might mention here that reverses has always resulted in a slightjerk when engaging)

now on the gear linkage-the white plastic lining near the counterweight was missing (pretty sure it always has been)but stuck a few cableties around the part and snipped off the excess to atleast hold the centre part off the sides the same as the plastic part would have

i managed to loosen two of the nuts on the linkage "tower" and could feel a small plastic guide around out of sight, which i turned so that fresh sides were facing up/down- ive read on posts here that it helped some people with similar problems

mine was still the same..refuses to engage started...but once on the road fine, round abouts, traffic lights..starting stopping up and down the gears and in and out of neutral all the time ..no bother

so im hoping this is not a new clutch job..or a new gear box job..but maybe a new linkage job...or even just a cable adjust?
this came on quick, it comes and goes, no smell or noises, erratic pulling slipping etc just a stubborn gear stick


any help or pointers much appreciated
