I just wanted to set a post on the final drive ratios

WV240D, if 79Mercy's '79 280CE's engine and vehicle speed match yours then this info should also apply to your car
(100) 280CE Nov77-Sep81, opt 4sp auto G 3.58
That info came from here

Some W126s start in first and some in second. I'm not sure about the Euro versions, but my 380 starts in first and came that way from the factory. The 560s start in second, and you could either get a factory first gear start, or an after market for them. I believe the 420s start in second as well...
So my guess is, anything lower than and including the 380 motor should start off in first. Anything bigger than 380 should start in second unless you're really on the gas, or you're lucky enough to have a factory first gear start module or a Bergwerks module...

|79Mercy||You should have 4 gears. Do the w126's start in 2nd?|

dam nice find, hope it works out well for ya
my car has been stuck in third on the highway and i wouldnt do above 55 mph cause the rpms were at like 5500

125km/h=77mph. Mine would be doing a good bit over 4000rpm by then, and I'd think the bigger body cars would have higher gear ratios.
At 70, mine would be doing close to 4000, so I'm guessing my car is in 3rd.

|79Mercy||At 70 the motor is humming but I doubt it is 3500 maybe 3000.|

That's a real nice looking car ! Please, just do something about those wheel arch trim pieces...
That engine speed looks about right. I have a South African manufactured (i.e. Euro) 230E, and at an indicated 125 km/h (I'm too lazy to do the conversion, sorry), my engine turns over at about 3650 rpm. I own a four speed manual, by the way.
