I think that might be the magic right there, the condenser on my car was replaced and looks to be more modern.

TZ_280SEL I have the 21-2201HP on my W108 4.5 I changed all the barrier hoses and flushed the system. Went with R134a. It cooled OK until 2 years ago when I bit the bullet and changed out the condenser for a modern horizontal flow aluminum one. Now, I get cold in the car and never have to run at the coldest settings, even in 90 weather in traffic ( It takes me an hour to drive the 8 miles home in the afternoon). So, I'm with "okyoureabeast" on liking the R-134a. You just can't expect it to perform with the antiquated condenser.

okyoureabeast I'm the weird one, I have r134a in my car and I'm very happy with the system. So long as the vents are operating as intended, it keeps me cool even in the hot SoCal summers.

Trick is to not part the car in direct sun!

Air con change to R134

I have to agree with Rick. It's pretty useless at high temps. Trouble here is that we have nanny state laws regarding air con. We aren't allowed to top up- you have to find the leak first. R12 is banned.

rick Some of the drop in mixes have worked reasonably well. Just stay away from R134a!

There are those that will tell you R134 is good and cools just as good as R12. I have to guess they live in Antarctica or northern Alaska.

Landon5790 I thought I was going to have to change the system in my 90 560sec; however, I learned there are plenty of people who can restore and preserve the old R12 systems. From my experience, there is no reason to convert. Just fix the problem with the system, if there is one--usually the issue is just a leak or a blown motor--and replace the R12 with Freeze12.

rick I would also take a look at the Old Air Products Pro6ten compressor. At one time, the Four Seasons compressor was sold by Delco with a Delco tag. They discontinued it because of a lot of returns, they can be hit or miss. The Pro6ten compressor is a direct bolt-in 10 cylinder rotary, no bracket mods needed. It will also run on ester oil if you so choose. The Four Seasons does not like ester oil
