nhdblfan Thanks all again for the help.
I was able to get that trim cover off-used a credit card to protect the wood and slid a very small tapped screw driver under it. I disconnected the wires-they were in nice and tight and reconnected them-still would not go in to S.
My shift lever is a wooden one with the keyless go in the center, had a chrome ring above the boot and a plastic one under-will try turning that lower one counter clockwise and see if that loosen's it (thank keyhole for the pdf).
I am stuck not being able to drive it for a few days-the 2 mile long dirt road I love on is being regraded and heavy rain has made it a mess-the ML 550 is a muddy mess but it makes it through.

Before you do anything, study the 2 WIS documents below.

One shows the location of switch S16/5.

The other shows how to remove a) the gear knob and b) the gearshift lever cover. Carch lugs are shown - but I do not know which direction to press the cover to remove it.

Blackduc1 If there is a Harbor Freight Store near you, you can find a nice set of trim tools for under $20.00. I grabbed a set a while ago, and there is a great variety of shapes and thickness of the tools, and they have been very handy to have around. I got tired of using the taped over screwdriver or paint scraper to remove interior trim pieces without breaking things!

I think it may well be worth a shot-I did get that chrome collar off and was able to raise it up,too the wires out and checked them out as best I could, clipped it back in,still will not switch out of "C". I will try that reset later today.thanks

I saw the vids on the trans resetting but its shifting just fine.I could try it I guess but want to get that cover off and be sure switch is connected to wires ok.

rudeney If you mean this:

Quote:
1. Make sure everything in the car is turned off and closed.
2. Turn the key to position 2 so all the dash lights are illuminated.
3. Press the accelerator fully to the floor, depressing the "kick-down" button.
4. Hold he pedal for 5 seconds and continue to hold it down.
5. Turn the ignition switch back one click to position 1.
6. Release the accelerator pedal, but leave the key in position 1.
7. Sit quietly and wait for about two minutes - do NOT open or turn anything on.
8. Listen for a "click" or "ping" noise form the dash.
9. Start the engine and drive the car for at least five minutes.
That actually resyncs the "drive by wire" accelerator pedal and throttle body. There is a way to reset transmission adaptations using SDS.

Blackduc1 I have seen videos and read about the procedure to "reset" the transmission. May or may not work, but it costs nothing to try. Search Mercedes Transmission reset and follow the procedure, which is really simple to do. Might be worth a try?? Just a thought.

rudeney Yes, the cluster will display the C/S (or W/S on pre-2005r cars) regardless of gear, as long as the ignition is on.

Anker I change the mode all the time while driving. If I need an extra boost I put it in S and then switch back to C when I am done.

It definitely works. It starts in 1st gear and the shift points are higher.

This is a 2009 CLK 350.
