|cwmoser||I'm suspecting that the rear shocks, installed by PO, on my 1986 560SL are HD - it rides a little harsh. I've looked at the shocks for an identification but can't find anything except the Bilstein logo. Other than the feeling in ones butt, how would you ID these without removing them?|

I had a vibration that would show itself sometimes at around 70 mph. I thought it was a tire balance issue as well but read somewhere that it also could be the idler arm bushings. Installed an idler arm rebuild kit and that took care of it.
I believe the part number you’ve listed below is for what is considered “comfort” shock absorbers.

I may need shock therapy. My 560SL sometimes vibrates on the interstate as if the wheels were not balanced. However I have two sets of wheels that are roadforce computer balanced and there are times at 70mph that either set runs smooth. When on a bumpy road the car sometimes responds like a severe case of cowl shake. Bumpy does not mean potholes, just running over manhole covers can cause the shake. This does not happen consistently... sometimes there is no shake, I have not figured out any pattern. Do you think new shocks would eliminate this symptom? When I bounce the car at each corner the motion stops right away, as it should with working shocks.
Is this the correct part number for what we call Bilstein comforts? Bilstein B4 24-011846

Ideally the shock valving should be matched to the spring rate. This accounts for different valving (HD, Comfort) front-to-rear.
Where it gets complicated is when the spring rates have changed, either through fatigue, coils removed, or aftermarket springs.
Ideally you would put the shocks on a shock dyno to measure them and then match to the revised suspension (including spring and bushing changes)
Of course that's an ideal. . . not sure I have heard of anyone in the R107 community who has done this.
