Thanks for the replies. I ended up doing something like what was described in
's post because I ended up looking at the printed owner's manual (how quaint!) and saw something similar. I didn't have it in front of me but I remembered to put the car into reverse. I think one also had to hit the "M" button on the door, then the side view mirror button, then put the car in reverse and do the adjustment. Anyway, whatever I actually did it worked.
BTW the Automatic mirror folding (which I have ON because it's a handy way of figuring out whether you've locked your car, at a glance) is just for when you lock your car. It doesn't have an effect on the "tilt down while reversing" thing.

set car in Park.
Try to set car in reverse again,, see if it works now.
Next time you sit in the vehicle, put it in Reverse with your foot on the brake.
Now while still braked, press the left or right side mirror button
Then adjust the mirror as you want it when having to reverse every time.
Once complete, put the car into drive with brake pedal still pressed.
Then adjust that same mirror back to normal viewing as when you need it to drive.
Turn off the vehicle.
Then restart, put in Reverse and see if that works.

Passenger side mirror: where the heck is the setting...
...to make it tilt down a bit when reversing in order to get a better view of the curb when parallel parking? It's not in the COMAND Vehicle settings that I can see (2018 C300 4Matic sports sedan).
