93SoCal400E can you pst a pic of PCB?

It may be fixable by moving eeprom chip to another pcb

DINGUS_E55 YA , new key needed - I reattached the COIL on the SMT board inside the key with a silver epoxy solder joint, but after reassembly , the IR test failed , and the key did not unlock the steering column nor allow turning the ignition. I have an 01 E55 , so i hope they can still accommodate owners after 18 years...

Witek_M Here is a rub. You can order key with license and proof of ownership but to pick it up vehicle has to be present. They will no release the key until it operates the car. In my case sales associate at MB dealer hit trunk unlock and when it popped open handed me the key.

khomer2 For the w210s, the FOB replacement is only available from the stealership - no other 3rd party source to replace the circuitry.
If you go this route, bring ID and proof of ownership to obtain a replacement FOB with blade key.
You may as well also pickup a "valet key" (no fob shell - just a key) that has the chip inside the plastic portion of the key to allow you to operate the car.

If you just want a FOB shell and blank blade key, check fleabay or aliexpress for a non-oem generic replacement. Check that the blank blade in the listing is the correct blade. Similar fob for the R129s but they use a slightly different blank blade.

The blank blades can be cut at any reputable locksmith shop (a tad more $$ to cut).

DINGUS_E55 Correct, metal key opens doors and trunk , FOB handles auto-locking,alarm, and ignition.

Do you or other forum readers have a preferred source for keys in 2019 ? I've read through benzworld and most of the links are no longer valid. Unfortunately , this is my only key , so its the dealer or maybe an alternative source. Thanks again for helping out - lucky the issue was isolated to the key, and not in the ignition column pickup coil, locking,etc..
Yours is a metal blade key in the fob (for the remote locks and alarm), correct?

DINGUS_E55 Thanks KHomer2 - Tried the secret handshake you suggested, but no avail - the problem is the key, after I slipped the circuit board out and found the coil is only connected to one junction on the board. Repair is impossible with a soldering iron as the is all surface mount- two options only possible here - deposit a dot of solder paste and reflow with a focused IR system, or perform a cold joint with silver epoxy , which is safest bet.

Try this.


1) Place the key in the ignition of your vehicle while the vehicle is turned off. ...

2) Pull the key out of the ignition while continuing to hold the "lock" button down. ...

3) Use another finger to push down on the "unlock" button five consecutive times. ...

4) Release the "lock" button.

DINGUS_E55 Thanks Joe55 > I replaced the battery with a new one , key fob operates door lock/unlock , trunk release with no issues as before, however I insert the key fob in the ignition , it will not turn in any position , as if it is not recognized by the ignition. I haven't checked any fuses yet , and I hope there is one blown that would explain the dis-function. I would imagine is starts to gets messy if it leads to the key inter-lock, coil pick,etc... This car has been bulletproof over it's lifetime , and it takes the crappy quality batteries that last a year and a half to introduce problems... I got a shop manual on order , but until then , any ideas ? Thanks!
