Seeing (and hearing ) the 917s being raced first-hand up from the age of 12 contributed majorly to my desire to go into engineering. ... Consider what automobiles were around on the roads 50 years ago, when they came up with this thing. The Ford GT40 and the Ferrari 330P4 impressed me very much already as a young boy. But the Porsche 917 marked the beginning of a new, unfortunately only short, era of a very different level.

I guess those who have never in person seen F1 cars with 12 cyl engines race, and witnessed the visceral sound you could feel in your gut, have no real comparison.
There was a time when no commentary audio recordings of races where quite popular, no kidding.
The spectacle of all the cars starting from the grid was something else. I miss those engines

It‘s not only the sounds, but the sights too. There was a time when F1 cars were beautiful. … Unfortunately, that time ended about 25 years ago. Contrary to racing motorcycles, F1 cars have become less & less beautiful since then, IMO.

I wonder if they can possibly still become less beautiful. Looking at the proportions & shapes of the vehicles in the attached picture, for instance, makes me shake my head, TBH. …
