The VLN races & the 24H race on the Nordschleife are currently the top events on the Nürburgring.

I don‘t know when was the last time you were there, but they renewed a few parts of the track and changed Quiddelbacher Höhe a bit since 2016 … as described in post 14 of this thread:

We were there late in 2016, after doing Oktoberfest in Munich and picking up her car.

That was after they changed the “Quiddelbacher Höhe“ section and before they renewed the asphalt at several parts of the track.

Hans Joachim Stuck, BTW, who is one of the best Nordschleife experts and one of those who wanted that change, was very helpful when Niki Lauda had his terrible accident at “Bergwerk“. He stopped the ambulance driver from taking Niki to the hospital in race direction around the track. Since the race was stopped he ordered him to go against race direction and leave the track after 3 corners at “Breitscheid“. That saved Niki a one hour ambulance drive.

And let‘s not forget Arturo Merzario who was the one who pulled Niki out of his blazing car.

I didn't know Striezel Stuck's involvement, but he grew up on the ring when his father ran the racing school, and like Sabine probably has nick names for every bump of the Nordschleife.
I just finished watching ZDF mediathek's online re run of Markus Lanz show Aug 2016 with Niki Lauda, Arturo Merzario and Niki's doctor.
That's where a good VPN and of course knowing German comes in handy

Niki Lauda will remain a legend of the sport.
Before I lived here, I was visiting friends in Los Angeles, and we went together to the 1982 Long Beach Grand Prix.
Niki Lauda won, Keke Rosberg came in second, and Gil Villeneuve came third after a great battle among those three, but was later disqualified for the double rear wing.

The ambulance driver was not a local, and Striezel knew the Nürburgring and its periphery better than anybody else at Niki‘s crash site.

The Nürburgring & Striezel belong together. He loved & still loves the Nürburgring. He once said that, if he would either not be capable anymore or be forbidden to drive on the Nordschleife, he would never touch a race car again. He had his first and his last professional race at the Nürburgring. The last one (24H in 2011) he drove together with his two sons. He always wanted to do that one day after he saw Mario Andretti do the Le Mans 24H together with his two sons in the late 80‘s.

Here is a picture of Arturo Merzario and Niki Lauda.
