Road legal Porsche 962

When Stefan Bellof came back to the pit with his 956 he sat down on the pit wall next to where I stood, took his helmet off and literally a small stream of sweat was dripping from his nose. He just sat there for minutes, quietly with his head bowed and did not look happy. … That was about 24 hours before he died.

IMO, the golden era of gentlemen racer‘s was in the 60‘s. These people (car and bike racers) had manners which don‘t seem to be part of today‘s Zeitgeist anymore. … My earliest motorsport memories go back to the F1 GP in Francorchamps in 1961. I was close to 5 years old and I remember staying with my father in the pits of Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips and Phil Hill who both drove the beautiful Ferrari 156 (my first Matchbox car), and Phil Hill was trying to speak some German with me. … The racers in the 60‘s were really nice, polite people and they dared to do things that today‘s F1 drivers would never dare. And compared with today‘s drivers, they got hardly any money for it. I started to lose interest in F1 when Ayrton Senna started to dominate it, but I still watched it until Michael Schuhmacher “pushed“ himself into his first F1 championship title in Australia in 1994. At that moment my interest in F1 dropped to zero, and has never come back. But that has also to do with the fact that F1 cars, IMO, have become less and less beautiful (to put it mildly ) over the past 25 years.

Fortunately there are historic car races in my neck of the woods (Francorchamps and Nürburgring) every year, where many very nice F1 & sports cars from the early 60‘s to the late 80‘s (including 917‘s) participate. …

I remember Norbert Singer and Hans Metzger since the 917 era. Norbert Singer still shows up at historic race car events … and if you want to see him smile, ask or talk to him about the 917. …
I didn't know such a car existed. 1993 Porsche Schuppan 962CR - Jay Leno's Garage

… me neither.

BTW, the blue/green 917 in both videos in post 8 is the only real Porsche 917 that was ever road legal in Germany … for a short time in the mid 70‘s. Now its home is close to my home. It was restored over 3 years at a garage 20 minutes away from my home. They did an amazing job. You should see it from close up and see how much love they put into every detail … excellent work. I wouldn‘t have painted it in the “hippie colors“ though. It‘s one of the first 25 built Porsche 917 (chassis number 021) and definitely one of the top 917‘s that still exist. …

AS far as I can recall, way back there were said to be only 2 street legal 917 in Europe. Count Rossi of Martini & Rossi drove one in France with a US / Utah license, likely with the proviso that the car never comes to America, and the other was build up by a German hotelier/restaurateur.
A few years ago, the German car was sold to a US collector, brought back to its original condition by Porsche, and shipped to California.

Btw, only 5 or so miles from my home is one of California's longstanding (1950's) car meets every Friday in the parking lot of Bob's Big Boy restaurant in Burbank, CA.
Everything from hot rods to muscle cars, US and European classics, and race cars. Last time a bunch of forum members went, there was a Pagani Zonda, a bunch of Ferrari's, and also a Gulf Ford GT40 with Gurney roof bubble. I don't know whether the bubble was original?

The first GT40‘s I saw, at the 1000 km race in Spa-Francorchamps in 1966, were all without the “Gurney-bubble“.

Here is a video of the 917-021 I talked about in my last post. It was partly made at the classic race car event “Spa six hours”, which takes place every year in Spa-Francorchamps, and partly it was made on a regular weekday. On that day they had to keep a muffler installed … unfortunately, of course. …

Here are some pictures of that race. The 2nd picture shows Brian Redman in front of Richard Attwood at Raidillon and the 3rd picture shows John Whitmore at Eau Rouge.

Reminds me to the Ford Falcon Jacky Ickx once drove in a touring car race in Francorchamps in the late 60‘s.

Here‘s a video of Dan Gurney from 2002, when he came back to Francorchamps with his 1967 Eagle T1G-Weslake.
